Pac-12 Conference Men’s Champs: Cal Surges to 89-Point Lead Behind Swift Medley Relay
Day Three Finals, Houston Texas
As expected, it took only one event for Cal to leap into the top spot of the team standings on the third night of the Pac-12 Conference Men’s Championships. While the Bears have been dominant in the pool throughout the meet, it took until Day Three for Cal to overcome the diving deficit it faced entering the meet. The Bears now own a 89-point lead over Stanford heading into the last day of competition.
Below is an event-by-event look at what unfolded on Tuesday night.

400 Individual Medley
A 49.71 butterfly leg to open the event enabled Cal’s Hugo Gonzalez to take the lead in the 400 individual medley, and the junior stayed in front to the finish, winning in 3:37.31. Although Gonzalez didn’t match his triumphant time of 3:36.60 from last year, he had plenty of cushion over runnerup David Schlicht of Arizona, who touched the wall in 3:39.59.
In claiming a 30-point advantage in the team standings, Cal also benefited from a third-place showing from Sean Grieshop (3:41.30) and a fifth-place effort by Chris Jhong. In between the Cal swimmers was Stanford’s Alex Liang, who posted a time of 3:42.44. Cal also received a sixth-place finish from Tyler Kopp and came away with 63 points from the championship final.

100 Butterfly
Make it eight victories in as many events for Cal, as Ryan Hoffer topped the field in the 100 butterfly. Coming off a win in the 50 freestyle on Monday night, Hoffer went 45.22 in the fly to defend his title and fend off Southern Cal’s Nikola Miljenic, who was timed in 45.33. Hoffer used his natural speed to take the lead at the midway point in 20.78 and was able to withstand Miljenic’s late charge.
Arizona’s Noah Reid was third in 45.67 and Stanford’s Ethan Hu also cracked the 46-second barrier with a time of 45.78. Hu was followed by teammate Jonny Affeld (46.17).

200 Freestyle
The monopoly Cal had on the Pac-12 Conference Championships came to an end in the 200 freestyle as Southern California’s Alexei Sancov held off the Bears’ Trenton Julian in a down-to-the-wire duel, 1:32.20 to 1:32.29. Midway through the race, Sancov trailed Julian, 45.07 to 45.16, but a 23.53 split on the third 50 gave the Trojan the lead, and that split proved to be the difference for victory and a personal-best time.
Sancov was 1:32.69 in leading off USC’s 800 freestyle relay on the opening night of the meet, which was good for a personal best. Two days later, he took that personal record even lower at the most-opportune time. In Julian, Sancov was dealing with a swimmer who split 1:31 in the 800 freestyle relay and was coming off a victory in the 500 free.
Stanford freshmen Preston Forst (1:33.23) and Luke Maurer (1:33.38) placed third and fourth while Arizona’s Daniel Namir (1:33.47) and Cal’s Destin Lasco (1:33.73) also broke the 1:34 barrier.

100 Breaststroke
Cal spent just one event off the top of the podium as Reece Whitley asserted his dominance in the 100 breaststroke by claiming a comfortable win over Arizona’s Sam Iida. Whitley led from start to finish and stopped the clock in 51.38 to beat Iida (51.97), who was the only other swimmer to break 52 seconds. Whitley’s first-place finish handed Cal its ninth win in 10 events.
Stanford’s Daniel Roy went 52.06 for third place while Cal added a fourth-place effort from Forrest Frazier, who was timed in 52.64. Through the 100 breast, Cal owned a 43-point edge on Stanford in the team race.

100 Backstroke
As overpowering as Cal had been during the Pac-12 Championships, the Bears put together their best effort in the 100 backstroke as freshman standout Destin Lasco, one of several standout newcomers on the college scene, led a top-three sweep. Lasco, who earlier in the session was sixth in the 200 free, won the 100 back in 45.30, just .05 ahead Daniel Carr and .08 quicker than Bryce Mefford.
Lasco trailed his senior teammates at the midway point of the race and was still behind with 25 yards left, but he had the most closing speed and passed his fellow Bears at the finish. Thanks to the strong showing, Cal expanded its lead in the team standings to 77 points over Stanford.
