COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado. October 8. Due to generous donations from longtime USA Swimming partner Phillips 66, the Wilmington YMCA opened the area’s first indoor pool on Saturday in Wilmington, California. This pool fills a void for the largely Hispanic community.

USA Swimming worked with local National Teamer Jessica Hardy (Long Beach, Calif.) to participate in the pool opening. Hardy provided four, 30-minute swim clinics to kids and adults of all abilities during the three-hour event.

“Seeing kids who have never been allowed the opportunity to swim before the Wilmington YMCA’s grand opening was one of the highlights of my career,” said Hardy, an Olympic gold medalist at the 2012 London Games. “Their faces lighting up, seeing a passion for the water become ignited, was genuinely heartwarming.”

Phillips 66 provided significant funding for the 75-by-50-feet pool. The four-lane pool has a depth of 4.6 feet and the Y has various programs planned, including youth and adult swim lessons, water aerobics, arthritis water exercise classes, Aqua Zumba and more.

“It is a beautiful gesture of Phillips 66 to build a brand new pool in the hometown of one of their refineries, and I was honored to be a part of the event,” Hardy added.
