Riccardo Di Domenico Downs 23-Year-Old Record at Evansville

South African sprinter Riccardo Di Domenico last weekend downed a University of Evansville record that had stood since 1999, belonging to Olympian Nikola Kalabic.

Di Domenico led off the Evansville 400 free relay at the A3 Performance Invitational on Saturday in a time of 44.77. That downs a school record dating all the way back to the 44.87 posted by Kalabic in February 1999, the oldest records on the books for the Aces.

“What a tremendous effort!,” Evansville swimming and diving head coach Stuart Wilson said in a press release. “Not only by Riccardo, but also by our entire team this weekend. The team did an incredible job this entire weekend.”

Di Domenico, a senior from Johannesburg, already has his name in the record books. He was part of four record-setting relays at last year’s MAC Championships, in the 200 and 400 medley and freestyle relays. (The 200 free relay set last year downed another mark from the Kalabic era in 2001). He was named the program’s most valuable swimmer last year and is a two-time team captain.

Di Domenico is a South African junior national champion. He finished in the top 12 in five events at the country’s short-course championships in August, topping out at fifth in the 50 butterfly. He was ranked 17th in South Africa’s 2022 long-course rankings in the 100 free.

Kalabic is a University of Evansville athletics hall of famer. A native of Serbia, he represented what was then the Federated Republic of Yugoslavia in both the 1996 and 2000 Olympics.
