Michigan and Indiana traded blows and Ohio State got into the mix at the Men’s Big Ten meet on Friday morning at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Michigan started off strong with three A-finalists in the 400 IM led by senior Dylan Bosch at 3:41.75. He was joined in the final by Ian Rainey and Cameron Stitt in the A-final. The Wolverines also placed two in the B final and one in the C final. Indiana only had one in the C-final. Other A-finalists were Jakub Maly, Daniel Conway, John Bushman, Augustus Whiteman and Josh Anderson.

Indiana came right back with two A-finalists in the 100 fly led by freshman Vinicius Lanza at 45.94. Junior Max Irwin was eighth at 47.24. Michigan placed two in the A-final with Evan White and Aaron Whitaker at third and fourth. Matt McHugh, Austin Flager, Jerzy Twarowski and Daryl Turner are also in the 100 fly final.

Indiana continued the momentum into the 200 free with Anze Tavcar of Indiana getting the top seed at 1:33.99 with sophomore Blake Pieroni in third at 1:34.12. It seemed like every time Indiana had a big swim, Michigan would answer with one of their own. Anders Nielsen (2nd), Peter Brumm (4th) and Jack Mangan (5th) made it into the A-final for Michigan. Brett Pinfold, Steffen Hillmer and Cannon Clifton rounded out the top eight in the 200 free.

Indiana will rack up a boat load of points in the 100 breast as Tanner Kurz and Ian Finnerty lead the standings with a 52.07 and 52.15 respectively. The Hoosiers also had Cody Taylor place fifth and Levi Brock place eighth. Michigan had no A-finalists, but two in the B-final. Roman Trussov, Marat Amaltdinov, Alec Kandt and DJ MacDonald rounded out the top eight in the 100 breast.

Matt McHugh of Ohio State is the top seed in the 100 back with a 46.26, slightly ahead of Michigan’s Kyle Dudzinski at 46.37. Michigan placed two others in the A-final with Whitaker and Jason Chen who sit fourth and fifth. Indiana placed Bob Glover in third. Austin Byrd, Andrew Appleby and Daryl Turner will also compete in the championship final tonight. Michigan placed two more in the B-final and Indiana has three in the C-final.

The rest of the teams will have a chance to catch Michigan and Indiana in the 3m diving event. Colin Zheng of Ohio State is the top seed ahead of Matt Barnard and Dylan Zoe of Minnesota. Joey Cifelli (Purdue), John Crow and Hector Boissier (Penn State), Josh Arndt (Indiana) and Addison Boschult (Iowa) will also compete for the 3m championship.

Friday night will start off with the 200 free relay and Michigan will be looking to win another relay with 50 free champ Paul Powers.

Overall, Michigan was 11-10-3 for the ups, mids and downs on Friday and Indiana was 10-3-4. Ohio State also had a good morning with 7-10-5. They placed at least one person in every championship final and could catch Indiana with the B-final depth.
