Michael Phelps Given Lifetime Achievement Honor on Wheaties Box
Michael Phelps appeared on NBC’s TODAY Show Monday morning to unveil a box of General Mills’ Wheaties cereal. Phelps was honored for his six-medal performance at the Rio Games, marking his third time that he has appeared on a Wheaties box.
Phelps was honored with a “Lifetime Achievement Honor,” the first time General Mills has ever given that honor.

Phelps previously appeared on a Wheaties box after his second Olympics in 2004, when he won eight medals (six gold) and after the 2012 Games in London, when Phelps entered into his first retirement.
He did not appear on a Wheaties box after winning a record-eight gold medals in Beijing, as he chose to sign an endorsement deal with rival Kellogg’s. That deal was not renewed after a picture of Phelps allegedly smoking marijuana was released in early 2009.

Correction: his record winning eight gold medals came in Beijing, not London
