Melvin Imoudu Lowers National Record in 50 Breaststroke at German Championships
Riding the momentum of a win in the 100-meter breaststroke earlier in the meet, Melvin Imoudu was even more impressive in the 50 breaststroke during Saturday’s action at the German Championships. Imoudu sprinted his lap in 26.57, which cut .05 off his previous national record, set in 2024. Imoudu was fifth in the 50 breaststroke at last year’s World Championships in Singapore and should be a medal contender at this summer’s European Championships in Paris.
Prior to lowering the German record in the 50 breaststroke, Imoudu clocked a time of 59.33 to capture first place in the 100 breaststroke. In the 50 distance, Imoudu finished well ahead of Jan Malte Grafe, who checked in with a swim of 27.29. On the women’s side, veteran Anna Elendt was the victor, going 30.54.
Best known for her talent in the long-distance freestyle events, Isabel Gose showed her skill in a shorter discipline by winning the 200 freestyle over Nicole Maier. Fourth at the midway point of the race, Gose reeled in her opposition over the closing 100 meters and prevailed in 1:57.69. That outing was slightly ahead of the 1:57.85 of Maier, who was followed by Nina Holt (1:58.11).
In the men’s 200 freestyle, Timo Sorgius secured a come-from-behind victory over Jarno Bäschnitt, 1:46.17 to 1:46.50. Sorgius faced a .13 deficit heading into the last lap, but a closing split of 27.40 was enough to overhaul Bäschnitt, who split 27.86 over the last 50 meters. Christian Giefing was the third-place finisher in 1:47.14. Meanwhile, the title in the men’s 200 butterfly was earned by Bjorn Kammann in 1:56.66.
Other winners were Linda Roth (2:12.47) in the women’s 200 individual medley and Jeremias Pock (1:59.65) in the men’s 200 IM, where Cedric Büssing was the runnerup in 1:59.74. The men’s 50 backstroke saw Vincent Passek emerge victorious in 24.85, .04 quicker than Ole Braunschweig.
