Melanie Henique Secures Olympic Bid in 50 Free; Sets French Record

In what was an otherwise underwhelming session at the French Elite Championships, Melanie Henique ended the third day of competition in impressive fashion, as she qualified for next summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo in the 50-meter freestyle. Henique, who earlier in the meet set a national record in the 50 butterfly, won the freestyle sprint in 24.39.

Coming off a strong season in the International Swimming League for Team Iron, Henqiue was faster in the prelims of the free, where she set a national record of 24.34. Although she was slightly slower in the final, her effort allowed her to easily top countrywomen Charlotte Bonnet (24.80) and Beryl Gastaldello (24.92).

Lara Grangeon-De Villele was the winner of the 200 butterfly in 2:10.91 while Emilien Mattenet prevailed in the men’s 400 individual medley, thanks to a time of 4:18.09. Leon Marchand was second in the 400 IM, but his mark of 4:19.05 was slower than the 4:16.81 he managed during the preliminaries.

Antoine Viquerat took the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.99, with Theo Bussiere second in 1:01.18, which was well off his prelims performance of 59.86. In women’s breaststroke action, Fanny Deberghes covered the 200 distance in 2:27.65, just .02 quicker than the time of Camille Dauba.

Russia’s Anastasia Kirpitchnikova easily won the women’s 1500 freestyle in a national record of 15:53.18 while Switzerland’s Roman Mityukov topped the field in the men’s 200 free in 1:47.80.
