SYDNEY – With the ink only just dry on his Australian age record from 10 days ago at the National Championships, Matthew Wilson has beaten his own time to rewrite the record books in the 16 years 200m breaststroke at the Australian Age Swimming Championships.

Wilson came into the race with a fast time in mind, and was pleased with just how fast he was able to go.

“My coach and I had set the goal for me to get under the 2:13, to crack the 2:12,” Wilson said.

“So I had to go a bit harder, I’ve done that and I’m happy with the swim. I felt a lot of sting, especially through the third 50. But I knew I just had to push through it to get that time.

“It would be nice to get on the podium at Opens (National Championships) next year but I’ll see how I go, I’ll see my progress.”

On the fourth night of finals, Shayna Jack picked up her fourth title, taking gold in a personal best time of 1:59.28 in the girls’ 16 years 200m freestyle.

Jack made the freestyle treble – having already claimed the 50m and 100m gongs – as well as the 100m back.

“It’s been six months since I did a PB so I’m happy with that,” Jack said. “It’s the third time I’ve been under two minutes so I can’t complain.

“I’m still getting used to it,” she said of the 200, having previously focused on the shorter sprint events. “My coach and I are trying our best to maintain my back-end speed and also working on the hundred at training so it’s been a mixture of things.”

Pushing Jack all the way was West Australian Tamsin Cook who was second in 2:00.63.

“She’s a very good swimmer and a great competitor,” Jack said of Cook. “She pushed me to the end so I was grateful for that.”

Elyse Woods from Melbourne Vicentre was third in 2:02.64.

In the corresponding boys’ event, Kyle Chalmers mirrored Jack’s achievement – grabbing the 200m gold to complete the 50/100/200 treble.

“It’s really good – I’m stoked with that,” Chalmers said of the three wins.

“That [the 200m] was a lot harder than the other races I have done here in the last two weeks. I enjoy doing it but after a couple of weeks racing I am a bit tired and probably wasn’t racing my best,” he said

Despite his fatigue, Chalmers still set a new personal best time of 1:49.04 in the 200m and said that he plans to continue training the longer distance with the hope of improving on his times over the coming year.

Jack Cartwright from St Peters Western was second in 1:53.22 while Cameron Usher from TSS Aquatics was third in 1:53.45.
