Markus Deibler, Short Course World Champion, Retires

Markus Deibler

BERLIN – Markus Deibler, a two-time Olympian for Germany and short course world champion, announced on his Facebook today that he is retiring.

“I have decided after much deliberation to end my career in competitive swimming,” Deibler said.

Deibler definitely ended on a high note.

Earlier this month in Doha, Qatar, Deibler took down the world record in the men’s 100-meter IM on the way to winning his first and only world title.

In Doha, he turned in a sizzling 50.66 to beat Ryan Lochte’s world record of 50.71 from the 2012 edition of the world short course championships.  To do so, he also had to beat both Vlad Morozov and Lochte in the same heat.

Deibler joined recent German world titlists Paul Biedermann (400 free) and Britta Steffen (100 free), who each snagged a victory in 2012 in Istanbul.

Deibler, a short course specialist, finishes his career with three European short course titles from the Eindhoven edition in 2010 as he won the 100 and 200 IM and helped Germany to the 200 medley relay victory.

As far as his Olympic outings, he took 40th place in the 200 IM in 2008.  Then, in 2012, he was sixth in the 400 free and 400 medley relays with Germany. He also took eighth in the 200 IM individually that year in London.

Markus is part of a dynamic sibling duo for Germany as his brother Steffen also competed in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
