Marie Wattel Set For Tokyo After Making The Cut In 100 Fly At French Elite Championships

Marie Wattel booked her ticket for Tokyo after she flew inside the cut in the 100 fly as the French Elite Championships concluded in Saint-Raphaël.

Wattel had served notice with a time of 57.92 in the morning heats although come the final it was Beryl Gastaldello who held a lead of 0.16 at the turn.

Wattel, whose national 50 fly record was claimed by Melanie Henique earlier in the meet, then came back in 30.63 to book her spot in Tokyo in 57.40, 0.11 inside the cut of 57.51.

Gastaldello was second in 58.09 with Adelaide Meuter third in 59.83.

Maxime Grousset won the men’s 100 free in 48.65 but was outside the 48.23 needed to punch his ticket for the Games.

Clement Mignon took second with 48.78 although Florent Manaudou, who made the cut in the 50 free, didn’t compete in the heats.

World silver medallist Jeremy Desplanches was a clear winner in the 200IM in a speedy 1:57.76.

The Swiss swimmer split 25.07/29.56/34.35/28.78 and was ahead from start to finish.

Eighteen-year-old Leon Marchand was second in 2:01.29.

David Aubry and Marc-Antoine Olivier traded the lead in the 1500 free which saw the pair separated by just 0.01 with 100 to go.

Aubry – the national record holder – went ahead on the penultimate 50 and touched first in 15:00.08 with Oliver finishing in 15:00.59.

Anastasia Kirpitchnikova of Russia won the 400 free by more than seven seconds in 4:08.58 with double medley champion Fantine Lesaffre the first Frenchwoman home in 4:15.76.

Fanny Borer stopped the clock at 2:15.41 to win the 200 back.

Yohann Ndoye Brouard edged out Mewen Tomac by 0.04 in the 50 back, stopping the clock at 24.94 to 24.98, and Theo Bussiere won the men’s 50br in 27.70
