Mandeville Wins Combined Team Title at Louisiana Division I High School Swimming Championships

SULPHUR – Mandeville High School swam away with the Louisiana Division I High School Swimming combined team title last weekend at the SPAR Aquatic Center in Sulphur, while the Catholic High School boys and St. Joseph’s Academy girls claimed the boys’ and girls’ individual team titles.

Mandeville topped the combined field with 521 points, ahead of St. Joseph’s Academy (420) and Catholic (416). On the girls’ side, St. Joseph’s Academy (420) topped runner-up Mandeville (296) and Dominican (261). Catholic claimed the boys’ title with 416 points, ahead of Jesuit (388) and Mandeville (225).

Mount Carmel got the meet started with a win in the girls’ 200 medley relay, as Maddie McGraw, Kaylin Swoboda, Abby Mahl and Caroline Cannon got to the wall first in 1:52.28. Dominican’s quartet of Brie Perry, Emma McMahon, Kaylin Smith and Emily Wilson finished a solid second with their 1:54.10, while Mandeville’s Charlotte Shackelford, Emily Burkhalter, Andie Rhoden and Margaret Larsen rounded out the top three in 1:56.98.

On the boys’ side, Jesuit’s Francis Plough, Sam Johnson, Cade Fuxan and Chris Simmons barely out-touched Catholic’s Connor Futch, Jonathan McKeough, Brady Grenfell and Nicholas Seagraves, 1:36.67 to 1:36.86. Mandeville’s Trey James, Kyle Manley, Keaton Teas and Brendan Manley also cracked 1:40 with a 1:39.58 for third.

In the girls’ 200 free, St. Joseph’s Academy’s Clayton Black swam away with the title after breaking 1:50 in finals with a 1:49.19. Mandeville’s Megan Loop, the second seed after prelims, held onto her position with a 1:51.33, while St. Joseph’s Academy’s Claire Charpentier rounded out the top three in 1:55.11.

Catholic’s Colin Bone dominated the boys’ 200 free final, finishing three seconds under his prelim time and almost six seconds ahead of the next-closest swimmer with a 1:38.80. Jesuit’s Michael Conrad tracked down second with a 1:44.37, while Catholic’s Lance Rodriguez placed third in 1:45.32.

Lia Joslin of Mandeville brought home the girls’ 200 IM state title, topping the championship final by three seconds with a 2:10.14. St. Joseph’s Academy’s Jeanne Frederic, the top seed after prelims, came in second with a 2:13.44, just ahead of teammate Bethany Seagraves (2:14.18).

Rummel’s Thomas Vanderbrok cruised to a win in the boys’ 200 IM with a 1:55.57, comfortably ahead of Hahnville’s Blaise Wise (1:57.32). Wise came in just ahead of Catholic’s Connor Futch, who wound up third with a 1:57.44.

St. Joseph’s Academy took the top two spots in the girls’ 50 free final, with Caroline Beene claiming the state title over Mary Claire Beaver, 23.73 to 24.19. Mandeville’s Denise Frantz also made the podium with a 24.31 for third.

Jesuit’s Chris Simmons sprinted to the boys’ 50 free title in 21.08, a tenth faster than his prelim time and well ahead of Mandeville’s Matt Senneff (21.76) and Destrehan’s Zachary Dantin (21.77).

Lafayette sophomore Ashlyn Hunt flew to victory in the girls’ 100 fly, posting a 56.36. Mary Claire Beaver of St. Joseph Academy earned another runner-up finish with a 57.04, while Mandeville’s Lia Joslin, the 200 IM state champ, came in third at 57.22.

Jesuit’s Cade Fuxan led a quartet of swimmers under 52 in the boys’ 100 fly final, as he stopped the clock in 51.25 for the win, just under half a second in front of Catholic’s Brady Grenfell (51.66). Mandeville’s Keaton Teas got to the wall third in 51.81.

Caroline Beene doubled up in the sprint freestyle events in another 1-2 finish for the St. Joseph’s Academy girls. Beene stopped the clock in 51.27 to edge teammate Amy Miller (51.79) for the 100 free state title. Mount Carmel’s Maddie McGraw finished a distant third with a 55.25.

Colin Bone of Catholic claimed a second individual win in the boys’ 100 free, clocking in at 45.06 to finish comfortably ahead of Jesuit’s Chris Simmons (46.71) and Catholic’s Nicholas Seagraves (47.71).

St. Joseph’s Academy dominated the girls’ 200 free relay, with Amy Miller, Clayton Black, Mary Claire Beaver and Caroline Beene crushing the field with a 1:35.75. Mandeville’s Lia Joslin, Heidi Fritscher, Denise Frantz and Megan Loop combined efforts to post a 1:39.94 for second, while Northshore’s Sydney St. Pierre, Katerine Kjos, Megan Paretti and Madelyn Byrd rounded out the top three in 1:44.70.

The final of the boys’ 200 free relay turned out to be much closer, as the Catholic foursome of Colin Bone, Nicholas Seagraves, Nicholas Romero and Brady Grenfell held off Jesuit’s Chris Simmons, Cade Fuxan, Jack Jackson and Francis Plough, 1:25.17 to 1:25.54. Brendan Manley, Glendon Rewerts, Kyle Manley and Matt Senneff gave Mandeville a third place showing with their 1:30.49.

Bethany Seagraves gave St. Joseph’s Academy its second win in a row in the 100 back as she got to the wall first in 58.34. Maddie McGraw of Mount Carmel also finished under 59 with a 58.92, while Dominican’s Brie Perry came in third at 1:02.52.

Rummel’s Thomas Vanderbrok, the state champ in the 200 IM, went two-for-two in his events after winning the 100 back in 52.39. He finished just under half a second ahead of Byrd’s Kaden Amidon, who came in at 52.81. Catholic’s Connor Futch touched in 53.37 to finish third.

After finishing second in the 100 free, St. Joseph’s Academy’s Amy Miller upgraded to first in the 100 breast, stopping the clock in 1:04.36 for the win over Mandeville’s Denise Frantz (1:04.86). Kaylin Swoboda of Mount Carmel swam a 1:07.24 to finish third.

Barbe senior Zach Stump closed out his high school career on a winning note, topping the boys’ 100 breast final in 57.67. Two others also broke 1:00 in the final, as Lafayette’s Jacob Bares came in at 59.06 and Mandeville’s Kyle Manley posted a 59.94.

Mary Claire Beaver, Clayton Black, Claire Charpentier and Caroline Beene gave St. Joseph’s Academy a dominating win in the final event as they combined efforts to win the 400 free relay by almost 10 seconds in 3:29.77. Mandeville’s Lia Joslin, Heidi Fritscher, Denise Frantz and Megan Loop came in second with a 3:39.15, eight seconds ahead of Dominican’s Catherine Carr, Emma McMahon, Hannah Morris and Brie Perry (3:47.27).

The Catholic boys claimed the 400 free relay state title in 3:13.93, thanks to Colin Bone, Lance Rodriguez, Braden Nyboer and Nicholas Romero. Jesuit’s Josh Armond, Jack Jackson, Patrick Cecola and Michael Conrad finished second in 3:15.72, while Hahnville’s Vincent Tamplain, Joe Foucha, Blaise Wise and Warren Massimini claimed third in 3:19.04.
