The Los Angeles 2024 candidature committee has released artistic renderings of two major athletic complexes, including a temporary aquatics facility that would sit on USC’s Dedaux Field and host three of the aquatic disciplines at the 2024 Olympic Games. The L.A. Memorial Coliseum, which played host to the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and track and field for both the 1932 and 1984 Games, will be undergoing a $270 million renovation beginning in 2018.
According to a press release by L.A. 2024,
The latest in high-tech temporary stadium construction and sports entertainment will enable LA 2024 to transform USC’s Dedeaux Field – home of the university’s baseball team – into an elite, purpose-built open-air swimming venue. The adjacent training venue will be the two pools at USC’s Uytengsu Aquatics Center, site of the 1984 Olympic swimming competitions, giving swimmers and divers at LA 2024 the unique opportunity to train in an Olympic venue.
L.A. 2024 expressed that they wish to build upon the “innovative sports presentation techniques” that are now encountered at many U.S. Swimming competition, including the 2016 Olympic Trials, held in Omaha, NE earlier this summer.
Olympic gold medalist Janet Evans, who holds the position of L.A. 2024 Vice Chair and Director of Athlete Relations, noted,
As a swimmer, I’m incredibly excited about being able to offer athletes the chance to perform in the most state-of-the-art competition pool, but also train in an Olympic standard pool. Both our track and field and swimming venues shows the depth of quality sports venues we are lucky enough to have at our disposal here in LA. With our ideal venues, world-class housing facilities and personalized services for athletes, in Los Angeles Olympians and Paralympians will have everything they could possibly need to achieve their dreams.
USA Swimming Executive Director, Chuck Wielgus, praised the committee, stating,
I come away more impressed every day with how LA 2024 has combined the city’s history of hosting world-class events with creating state-of-the-art temporary venues that will set a new standard for Olympic hosts. When I look at the aquatics venue, it’s perfect to have the world’s greatest stage in such a stadium and to have the training pool just next door where 1984 Olympic legends Rowdy Gaines, Tracy Caulkins and Mary T. Meagher captivated the world.

The Olympic pool was outdoors in ’84 a nd I don’t recall any complaints. But Dedeaux Field isn’t particularly spacious and I don’t see how LA24 could install a temporary 10000-seat facility there.

I hope they don’t take down the older one, but knock down the trash that has surrounded that community, and the filth. Sad what’s happened to LA ?

The pool and spectator stands need at least a suspended roof and awnings; if not and indoor pool with climate control; by 2024 it will be way too hot to have elite high level outdoor summer meets in L.A. Its already getting too hot even now, sometimes.
Do they have enough water to host the Olympic games?
