CEDAR FALLS – Longtime University of Northern Iowa swimming coach Glen Henry passed away Friday at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital in Cedar Falls, according to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. Henry was 75.

Henry led the Northern Iowa men’s program from 1966-1981, in addition to coaching the women’s team the final two seasons. He also served on the NCAA Swimming and Diving Rules Committee and officiated at NCAA Division I swimming and diving national championships.

A motorcycle accident in 2004 left Henry paralyzed from the chest down, but didn’t stop him from returning to UNI as a volunteer assistant coach in 2010.

The UNI pool, Glen F. Henry Swimming and Diving Pool, is named in his honor, and a scholarship endowment has been set up in his name through the UNI Foundation.

Glen was also our freshman football coach in 1968 and my guiding light in continuing four years in Panther athletics. He was firm and fair and always dependable. My son swam for the last year of UNI swimming before they ended the men’s program. I was proud he set a record in the “Glen Henry Pool”.

Glen was full of life even after his accident. His light shined bright on many of us and he did so much more than just coach. He helped us transition from boys to men and do so with flare! I am so glad that I was able to make it back last year to see him one last time. Once again he made me feel special and brought back great memories of being one of Bullet’s bunch. Rest in peace my friend and I look forward to walking with you in Heaven.
