The organizers for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics recently chose the logo for their Summer Games choosing a design that embodies harmony.

The winning design was first weeded out of a large grouping of 15,000 submissions before being chosen from a shortlist of four by the Tokyo 2020 Logo Selection Committee. The winner was Asao Tokolo, a 46-year-old artist who has had his work featured in multiple exhibitions and is a graduate of Zokyo Zokei University where he studied architecture.

A checkered pattern of 45 interconnecting pieces make up the composition of the logo, while the color indigo is meant to symbolize and “express a refined elegance and sophistication that exemplifies Japan.”

When asked about his design Tokolo stated,

I was thinking of something like a coloring picture that everyone can add their own color to…White against blue–it’s a very clean-cut expression. The games will also be held during summertime and I wanted to add some coolness into my design.

Logo Selection Committee Chairman Ryohei Miyata added,

The committee found this checkered pattern to be very simple and we can feel the refined sophistication of the Japanese tradition.
