Josh Matheny Continues Breaststroke Blitz With 52.02 Mark in 100 Distance
Indiana recruit Josh Matheny, one day removed from setting a National Age Group (17-18) record in the 200-yard breaststroke, put up the eighth-fastest time in the history of his age group on Friday night in the 100-yard breast. Competing at the Winter 18-and-Under Championships in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Matheny clocked a time of 52.02. That outing came 24 hours after Matheny went 1:51.38 in the 200 breast to break Reece Whitley’s standard of 1:51.43.
Although better known for his prowess in the 200 breaststroke, Matheny put his speed on display by nearly breaking the 52-second barrier. In his senior year of high school, Matheny is bound for Indiana University, where he will mold his talents under Ray Looze. Matheny already carries international credentials, as he was the gold medalist at the World Junior Championships, where he also took home the silver medal in the 100 breaststroke.
In women’s action, Georgia recruit Mia Abruzzo won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:10.27 and was also the victor in the 100 butterfly, where she stopped the clock in 53.73.
