Jordan Rzepka, Sarah Bacon Win Titles at USA Diving Winter Nationals

Jordan Rzepka and Sarah Bacon added titles on the fourth night of the 2022 USA Diving Winter National championships. The competition in Morgantown, West Virginia, wraps up Sunday.

Rzepka, representing Purdue Diving, scored 853.50 points to top the field in the men’s platform event. He was one of three divers to top 800 points, and he scored 100.70 points on his final dive, a front 2.5 with three twists, to hold off the charge by Joshua Hedberg and Zachary Cooper.

Hedberg, of the Indiana International School of Diving, scored 816.95. It’s his second medal of the week, having won gold in the platform synchro event. (His partner, Tyler Wills, finished seventh Saturday.) Cooper, who made a charge late in finals, grabbed bronze in 804.45.

“I had one goal in mind tonight, and that was to take it one dive at a time,” Rzepka said. “I usually get a little overwhelmed and think about dives I’m not doing at that moment. I feel like I did a good job with that tonight.”

Bacon added to her 3-meter synchro crown with gold in the individual event. She tallied 579.60 points for her fifth career national title and first individual 3-meter gold.

Hailey Hernandez, the University of Texas diver who won 1-meter gold Friday, finished second with 573.85 points. Carolina Sculti secured bronze with 543.55.

Bacon was fourth after preliminaries but surged into the lead with a reverse 2.5 pike in the third round of finals. She followed with another 70-point dive to get past Hernandez for good in the fourth round, producing the only two 70-point dives of the competition.

“I would have hoped to dive a little better in both the prelim and the final, but my coach Wenbo (Chen) and I just wanted to come to this meet and relax and have fun diving,” Bacon said. “I haven’t competed since World Championships this summer so just getting back in the swing of things and being able to put down some solid dives in the final felt really good.”
