Ivy League Parent Opens Up About Pain and Shock Met During Lia Thomas Controversy

lia-thomas-ivy-league-penn

As the NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships draw nearer, conversation and controversy continue to surround Penn transgender swimmer Lia Thomas. Parents, especially in the Ivy League, continue to speak out anonymously about the fairness of competition. In a recent interview with Women’s Declaration International, the parent of a Penn swimmer recounted what has transpired over the past few months.

“I remember being stunned that this was happening, and even more stunned that it went unreported and unwhispered among the talkative swimming community,” a mother of an Ivy League swimmer said in a recent interview with Women’s Declaration International. “I asked my daughter if she was aware of the situation, and (at that point) she wasn’t. She quietly said: ‘That’s not fair.’ And the disappointment in her voice was clear. But she perked up and said she was sure they would figure this out once everyone understands. Oh how I wish her faith in those that have the power to make change had been well-placed.”

When the season started, Thomas was in compliance with an NCAA rule that required transgender women to have undergone hormone-suppressant therapy for at least a year prior to competition. The NCAA rule, though, was based on early 2010s science and controversy erupted, primarily concerning the advantages held by Thomas due to undergoing male puberty. In response to arguments over Thomas’ participation in a women’s sport, the NCAA indicated it would follow USA Swimming’s guidelines to determine transgender eligibility.

USA Swimming eventually announced the adoption of new guidelines that required transgender women to have a testosterone threshold of 5 nmols/L for 36 consecutive months. The NCAA, in response, indicated it would not follow USA Swimming’s guidelines and stated that it would require athletes to produce a testosterone threshold of 10 nmols/L prior to the NCAA Championships. The average testosterone threshold for a female is .5 to 2.4 nmols/L.

Whether Thomas produced that requirement is unknown, as the NCAA declined to comment, even to the simple question of whether Thomas will be allowed to compete. Yet, with her name on the psych sheets, it appears Thomas will be eligible to race in Atlanta.

“I called a lawyer to ask how the law, women’s rights and Title IX might be handled in a case like this. … I was trying to be respectful (with my) pronouns. I made it clear I didn’t want to offend, but pleaded that it seemed there was obvious conflict here for women who already had so much less opportunity in sport to now have to give places away to individuals who identify as women,” the Ivy League parent said. “I was met with the single most stunning response I have ever received on any issue. I was told that the worlds biological and genetic had no business being in a discussion about sex and gender. I was told Trans women are women. They are women. They are girls, and that no language that minimizes that point should be tolerated. I was told that it was an offensive question and my language was out of date. I was told that sex and gender are equally important and that the ACLU is actively removing sex from legal documentation. I tried to gently prod at the preposterous arguments I was hearing and I was met with an absolute brick wall when she concluded that … the ALCU would never represent CIS women against women. I didn’t sleep that night.

“The next morning, my education began. I woke up determined to figure out what had gone wrong, what I missed. I started researching feminism, read court decisions, read every article I could find.”

Meanwhile, the swimmers in the Ivy League were basically given a gag order by their schools and conference, and only anonymous parents or petitions have come into play all season.

“While I was reading, my daughter and the rest of the Ivy League were getting another kind of education, the kind no one should receive,” the parent said. “The Ivy League released their statement dripping with sexism. Mandatory meetings were called by schools with scripts read by coaches,” the parent continued. “The girls, already caught off guard,  and intimidated but upset, were now silenced. They were manipulated, coerced and emotionally blackmailed. They were told their leagues and their schools had spoken and made their positions clear. They as athletes had made their decisions to be part of the school and the league and had to support it.”

Finally, they were told their first priority needed to be the safety and protection of their Trans classmates. Now there was little chance anyone would speak out.

“After this, I spoke with my daughter. The influence was clear. She thought it was unfair that Lia was competing and almost all the girls did, and they spoke about it amongst themselves. … She wanted no part of being hated on her campus or hurting people she knew, or embarrassingly being kicked off of her team.

“… More women and teams will race against Lia at NCAAs. I want people to wake up to the world we are creating for women.”

This is just unspeakably sad for women’s sports. No amount of linguistic contrivance, surgical mutilation, hormonal suppression, or for that matter, wishful thinking, is going to change someone with XY Chromosomes into a woman.

Its bad for Biological Women all around. The fact that a boy/man can say they identify as a girl/woman and get their way was coming big time. Remember when the Transgender woman wanted Dave Chappelle removed from Netflix for making “Transphobic” comments(which he didn’t). The protests were a way to determine how far they could get their way, think about how the Trans Woman was talking about how unfair Netflix was towards the Trans Community and wanted changes, then filed a suit. The suit was settled, terms are sealed and you have to ask, did Netflix stop its unfair practices towards the Trans Community or were there any to begin with?
“When you stand for nothing you fall for everything”, everyone stood for nothing and fell for the okey doke. The same was done to J.K. Rawling when she said Gender was a fact and was not allowed at her own Harry Potter 20yr Reunion, now that’s deep. Little by little is how they did it

Thank you for saying what so many are thinking. I hope your daughter will be very proud that her mother is sticking up for her as well as all female athletes. I agree with everything you have said. I have twins, one being a female and one being a male. Both were competitive swimmers, swimming distance events and I can say that in no way would it would have been fair for my son to compete against his sister. The world is truly messed up thinking this is okay and it is time for people to stand up for female athletes.

Lia is taking advantage of 10 years of male puberty; it provides a far bigger boost in power-sports, the sprints, as opposed to distance events.
The gap bt males and females in the sprints is
13+%. Meanwhile, the gap in the 1650y is just 8.8%.
The gap in a punching motion is … 150%!! So of course Lia would gravitate away from the distance events that used to define her, where she has competed all her life, towards the shorter-distances and sprints.
It’s another reason why we say Lia’s participation in “WOMEN’s” sports is not fair.

Hello Nancy,

I agree with you but this goes beyond the advantages of male puberty. If you look at prepubescent males and females you will consistently see that boys are faster, about 1.5 seconds faster, for example, in a 9-10 age group 50M event. I suggest trans men and trans women can both compete in the male category and then have them choose what locker room or bathroom identifies with their gender. It is, after all, more about how they identify with clothing, relationships and pronouns, and bathrooms than how they compete anyway. This way there are no invasive questions about ones testosterone levels, which is private information and costly to those on lower socioeconomic levels.

If trans women were going to be taking over women’s sports it would have happened over 40 years ago. I was 11 years old when I heard the cries of women’s sports being done for because a “tranny” was competing in the US Open. I am 57 now. That is 46 years of hearing and reading nonsense like this letter to Swimming World Magazine. And all that time, there’s never been a trans woman to win a Div 1 National Championship or an Olympic medal. But still the transphobic people whine and complain as if all of this is new.

I don’t care about this person’s wants to be a female. It does not affect me. Go ahead and dress in girls clothes and take drug. But let females compete against females. Telling ppl that a 6ft 3 male can’t crush females on average is nonsense. Letting it go eventually the whole team would have no females. I would take my child out of the program as should every parent there. Let Thomas race for the whole school.

There would had been more weight added to your argument if you had brought up the difference in treatments between then and now. It would have been also interesting if you had hard facts, for instance, did the transition happen before or after puberty-but no, you instead resort to name calling. Name calling, shaming and throwing guilt around to make a point is what middle schoolers (and people with NO quality discussions) do because they have no argument. Period.

40 years ago people thought differently so no it wouldn’t have happened then. Stop calling people transphobic because they point out an obvious fact. Lia has an advantage of all her years going through puberty as a male. Her arms are longer, she has more lung power, etc., things she developed as a male. This is about fairness, not Trans phobia. Still, even one is unfair to the natural born female student athletes in the same race, and the team in the same meet. Any championship ? should include an asterisk due to the potentially two decades of male anatomical development prior to the change.
It’s absolutely unfair.
With life choices, comes acceptance of consequences to ones decisions, and they should not be unfair to anyone else in their circle of competition.

It appears you will never be able to win a race if a trans woman is competing.” I am all for Lia being able to swim, or even compete, but she has to compete with like others. And in this case it is trans women.

I am a Women’s Swimming All- American, and graduated in 1991. My daughter is also a Women’s Swimming All- American, who will compete against a “Woman” with a penis who swam on the Men’s team for 3 years in college.
My own Mother spoke openly when I was a young girl about how unfair it was that Women couldn’t compete in sports. There were not many of any Women’s sports teams in college.
Women Sports Matter!
Please consider these Women who train so hard and every month get their period with cramps, nausea and diarrhea. They continue to train hard, but have a disadvantage to a transitioning man to woman who has never had a period and has had testosterone running through her/his body throughout the entirety of his/her life. We don’t condone steroids why is it ok to have a transgender swimming with elevated levels of testosterone swim against other Women in Sports.

We divide sports competition into simple categories by sex, age and, in combat sports, weight. It’s not perfect, but it generally works to produce a competition recognized as fair. It’s clear that Lia Thomas is not a woman, which makes his competing against women unfair. It would also be unfair if Lia Thomas were the 15th best swimmer on the Penn Women’s team, but that’s another issue.

How obviously unfair it is for Lia Thomas to compete in women’s swimming has run straight into an ideology that is built on the lie that basic biology does not matter. Everyone can see that this particular emperor has no clothes. But, there is an entrenched structure here that prefers its lie to the obvious truth. So, does it change it opinion? No, it vehemently attacks everyone that points out the lie. The vehemence of attacks is no doubt based upon the fact that — deep down — these particular Red Guardsmen know the truth.

These particular enemies of truth are running the Ivy League, which is the pre-eminent organization of post-secondary education in the United States and perhaps the world. Colleges and universities are supposed to be a place where you can vehemently debate issues, but on this one issue, colleges and universities are shutting down debate to promote what is so clearly a falsehood.

What, then, is the future of the United States if you can’t tell the truth about a matter of basic biology at the Ivy League?

We must REFUSE to repeat the lie! Stop calling Lia HER. When we call HIM what HE is it will at least keep the fight going and enrage them as much as they enrage us. Using the wrong pronouns silences us and teaches our children something that’s not true. NO ONE can change their gender.

What Will Thomas (that is not a woman, I don’t care who is offended) has done is much like what Communist athletes did during the Olympics of the 60’s – 90’s, and what Chinese athletes do now: outright cheating. The difference is that this form of cheating is social engineering. The only way to defeat Will Thomas is to have him compete in an empty pool. Women should refuse to compete against him. They must meet force with force. No swimmers?, no NCAA funding. You hold the cards. Don’t be afraid to play them.

The facts are that no amount of Testosterone Suppression or Estrogen Therapy is going to shrink Will (Lia) Thomas down from 6’5″ and 200+ lbs to 5’10” 155 lbs.

I’ve been speechless for weeks since hearing of this case. As a late transitioning trans woman myself I cannot defend Lia’s quick qualification for the women’s the team….6’3″ and look at those shoulders! C’mon, she fully developed a large male body. My larger trans feminine friends report after years of HRT it’s as if a lawnmower engine is trying to power a bus…and at age 61 I can identify with that, but it’s only an anecdote.
The only way to go forward is to accept the new crop of young transitioning trans girls that do not experience male puberty, as more likely candidates for competitive sports. My own daughter competed against mostly boys in her highschool wrestling career…weight categories kept things within reason.
I don’t have good answers for the sports issue.
I can say I have observed many different outcomes in physical development among my trans peers. And there is no consensus in what HRT methods to use. It’s nuanced. It’s case by case. In my more paranoid moments I suspect the worst possible choices of participant are thrust into test cases for new policy in order to sabotage it. The UK prison housing cases come to mind…
Let’s look at what Lia is supposedly stealing from cis women in this competition.
Are grants and placement opportunities automatically guaranteed to title and record holders?
I’m really offended when grade school and highschool kids are thrown into this controversy over fair competition in sports. For one, grade school kids haven’t developed at all yet. Very little difference. Very little at stake- except for learning teamwork and community ideals. And physical health.
Sports is the one stumbling block I keep tripping over. I don’t know what’s right. I don’t know what is fair. No where else does body size and strength bring such conflicts as this.
Lia will be young only once. It’s not her fault that she won the genetics pool and got 6’3″ and athletic. Or happened to be trans and only just beginning HRT. Allow her to participate….take these titles and records with a grain of sand, everyone knows who she is for goodness sakes. Keep a separate set of records books if you can’t keep track, lol.
Like, where IS ” the money” in women’s sports? Look at pro soccer and basketball for instance.
Is this motivation for a gender switch? I think not. I believe Lia is simply a determined athlete who is trans and stuck in a bind. Kudos for fiercely pushing ahead swimming, be it 50 percentile in men’s division, or top in women’s. The performance has been consistent, her body is honed to swim.
I don’t see companies lining up to pay Lia for endorsements, nor scholarships for her in reality merely above average sports ability. I hope all the publicity brings more interest and $$ into women’s sports. Heaven knows we have a physical fitness shortfall as Americans.
Lia is a fairly rare case I suggest taking as an honorary member of the team. All women should have far more opportunities to participate in amateur sports.
I expect disagreeable replies from all fronts…yet any damage at this point is all “what ifs” and has not happened. Lighten up! No one has picked your pocket. I acknowledge there are advantages to a male frame. I acknowledge certain privilege growing up male. In my world, I have made attempts to catch up interested cis women to the manly world of bicycle repair and all the little shop skills most handy types pick up as a matter of course. I try to relate the idea there is no shame being a beginner, that in fact most men are seriously ” unhandy” and fake it. You don’t have to be big to turn a wrench or learn technical terms… The non profit bike shop is part of an effort to promote cycling in general, an overwhelmingly male mode of transport and sport.
We need cooperation more than competition today.

Today, when you speak of minority rights, few people realize women are part of that category.
Women are still attempting to find their place in our society that allows them an equal footing to follow and achieve their dreams. That’s why Title IX was created.
But, now young girls have to defer their dreams because any man can find his womanhood at anytime and express it in anyway he finds appropriate. It’s up to him.
The girls need to wait for those decisions to find out where they fit in the scheme. This is old stuff for women. Women have been waiting for men to decide so they can make their plans, forever.
It is new, that young women wait for young men to decide when they will present themselves as women to the world and then, of course, lead the young women in anything they choose to do.

I fully agree! My daughter is only two years old but I am absolutely terrified that when it comes time for her to compete in athletics she might be competing against boys who are pretending to be girls. I know that sound cold but it’s true! If my son (currently 5 years old) started telling me that he wants to be a girl I would absolutely explore that with him. I would draw the line with allowing him to do hormone therapy or any surgery until he is out of my care. NOR WOULD I ALLOW HIM TO COMPETE ON GIRLS TEAMS! The idea that these people who have chosen to convert to women don’t have a competitive advantage is ridiculous. Lia Thomas was a mediocre competitor on the men’s league at best. Now she’s out there destroying the women. I competed martial arts and I could never imagine a man deciding to convert into a woman and then going in and fighting women. I would like to know where we draw the line as far as reality and fiction. Trust and believe that this is the kind of thing that I would fight a person’s parent over. If my daughter loses out on opportunities in college because a boy decided that he wanted to be a girl that is absolutely not fair. Another thing that drives me nuts is that this all makes me sound like a bigot which couldn’t be farther from the truth. I’m just a realistic person who used to champion for transgendered rights gay rights women’s rights basically for everybody to be treated equal, now the problem is transgender woman competing against women is not equal.

Ask someone with an elementary education if it makes any sense for a biological boy to compete against a biological girl. Where is the feminist movement in all of this?

so this guy couldn’t win as a male so he figures he can compete as a female and win. I don’t care what he identifies as . it’s unfair for trans to compete in sports in my opinion. be whatever you want but don’t take unfair advantage of others who are legitimately competing. I say let him be a girl all he wants. but he can’t compete as one. back in my day you got a iron pipe to the knee caps for doing that

Men’s sports, mixed sports. women’s–oh, wait! No such thing any longer. . .This mother is right: sex and biology DO belong in sports. NO human being can change her/his sex. And men in women’s sports are unfair and wrongheaded.

EVERY SINGLE ” BIOLOGICAL FEMALE SWIMMER SHOULD PROTEST BY QUITING THE SWIM TEAM. FURTHERMORE EVERY SINGLE BIOLIGICAL MALE SWIMMER SHOULD ALSO QUIT THE SWIM TEAM TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR THEYRE BIOLOGICAL FEMALE SWIMMERS.

This is not difficult. There should be three categories of competition: men’s, women’s and transgender.

The Ivy League presidents show an extraordinary lack of reason, something I long felt about the ACLU. These presidents have cheapened their brand.

They should apologize, acknowledge that Thomas is male, and disallow him from competing in any women’s division.

IDENTIFYING as a female and BEING a female are very different realities!!! She has the right to live her life as a female, but she has no right competing in sports as a female. What is wrong with the people in this Country…

The male cheats, and the institutional encouragement they get for their reprehensible behaviour, make me angry enough to walk onto any poolside, pitch, track or boxing ring, on my own, even if thousands of spectators boo me, and shout, “Get that man out!” I will do just that, if this nonsense comes to anywhere near me. This won’t go away on its own.

Just curious as to how many biologically born females have transitioned to male team competition after male hormone replacement therapy and how have they faired in terms of competition.

I have yet to hear any transgender athlete say that this is fair and just. Even THAT community knows that this is unfair to biological women. Why can’t the trans community stop being lazy and charter their own league?

So what are we going to do, see normally a protest would occur, no one swims against “Will “Lia” Thomas(taking hormones and just saying you feel like a woman doesn’t get it). I guess Sometimes you can feel like a nut, and sometimes you don’t, what’s going to happen after he graduates (this is his last year). The past 3yrs he was on the men’s swim team and was 400th in ranking. Now he takes a few pills and is #1 in the country against all collegiate women swimmers using all that he learned as a boy. I’m sorry but I couldn’t stand by and allow this to happen to the Women who worked just as hard to compete against OTHER WOMEN. Not some Man who decided all of a sudden he feels like a “Woman” and anyone as we have seen who disagrees with Will “Lia” Thomas swimming on UPenn’s Women’s Swim Team is automatically “Transphobic”. Question, will he continue to live life as a Woman after he’s taken every swim place trophy and medal from Women who worked hard for their positions on Women’s swim teams. Has he taken steps for full transition, will he have the full operation and become a real transsexual. We’ll never know until it actually happens, question?, what happens when he decides he no longer feel like a Woman and stops taking the hormones. Is there a time frame after graduation and such that he must remain a Woman. Cause it seems that’s what will happen, he’ll wait his time frame and be done, seriously, you can see its all fake based on his appearance. He’s a man who found a sneak and is waiting it out all the while boys/teen boys/men are taking unfair advantage that was meant to help a few but has in turn harmed girls/teen girls/young and mature women. Next will the WNBA have to accept a Transgender Man/Woman, a Man who couldn’t make it in the NBA. Also ask yourself this, why is it only trans men/woman crying about being allowed into girls/teen girls/women bathroom and locker room.

Being Born a Girl is a curse we survive everyday. I only say “curse” because we already are perceived as the weaker sex, families in some countries kill baby girls because they are considered burdens on the family. If we do survive to grow up we have to fight all types of dangers and still try and have a normal life to grow up into a mature successful woman. Now we are being negated in every aspect, a man can play dress up and take a woman’s a place on a woman’s swim team. A man can play dress up and play any women’s role in entertainment(Madea cemented this madness). Now it seems there is a way a man can dress up like a Woman have a surgery that could possibly have him to carry baby by having a Uterus transplanted into his body!?????? If that happens, we women have to ask, why are we even here, we’ve been replaced in every aspect of life. Men have literally gotten revenge for the Apple Eve picked by having us made useless and not needed for anything, ever.

Maybe they could do like horse racing and add weight to curb the advantage of one person over another. It sure works in horse racing!

“I was told that the worlds biological and genetic had no business being in a discussion about sex and gender. I was told Trans women are women.” So, if anybody can be a woman in the NCAA’s eyes, then the only useful definition of “woman” is someone who participates in women’s sporting events.

In order to detoxify the upcoming NCAA women’s championships, I would like to come out as identifying as the person who won all the events in advance. I noticed there is a paucity of middle-aged dudes who hate swimming competing in this year’s women’s championship. I would hate to think the NCAA so anti-inclusive and narrow in its definition of champions as “people who can actually swim, did so in the event, and finished first”. Our greatest strength is our diversity of me winning all the events.

Please send me my medals, or you will hear from my lawyer and my two favorite semioticians.

It’s unfair. That much is clear to all. These are the early days. Eventually we will find ways to make it fair – some kind of factor that can be applied, maybe. Until then, biological women will be getting the short end of the stick.

Please there is no need to trash trans folks or call Lia a man. Trans people have enough pain in their lives without that kind of talk.
However, Lia would have done a lot more for the trans community by not swimming competitively as a female. She clearly has advantages over cis women in swimming. Unfortunately the NCAA added fuel to the anti-trans sentiment by choosing misplaced political correctness over fairness.
