IUPUI Closes Out 2005 With Dual Losses

ST. LOUIS, Mo., December 23. THE IUPUI men's and women's swimming and diving team finished the 2005 part of the schedule with 161-135 and 192-82 losses at the University of Saint Louis.

A quartet of swimmers and divers gave the Jaguars wins in seven of the 14 individual events. Senior Ryan Orzechowicz (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) and freshmen Richard Dailey (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) and Matt Levenhagen (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) each won a pair of events, while junior Brian Wheeler (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) picked up the final victory.

Orzechowicz swept both diving events with team season-bests scores. His career-best total of 303.20 points in the one-meter event was the sixth-best score in school history in the event. It also surpassed the NCAA provisional score and qualified Orzechowicz for the NCAA Zone Diving Regionals. His score of 302.95 points in the three-meter event was also the sixth-best score ever at IUPUI.

Levenhagen took first in both breaststroke events. His winning time of 1:00.03 in the 100 breaststroke was the best by an IUPUI swimmer this year and sixth-best ever at IUPUI. It also gave Levenhagen a .34 margin of victory. He easily won the 200 breaststroke by 2.59 seconds with a time of 2:12.93, the fifth-best time in school history. Levenhagen was additionally third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.01.

Dailey took first in the 200 backstroke and 200 IM with team season-best times in both events. He splashed to an easy win by 2.82 seconds in the 200 back with a time of 1:57.10. That was the 11th-best clocking in school history.

His time of 2:01.24 in the 200 IM nipped the second place finisher by 0.25 seconds and was the 13th-quickest ever at IUPUI. In addition, he took third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.05.

Wheeler took IUPUI's final victory with a dominating win in the 1000 freestyle. He overwhelmed the rest of the field by 15.32 seconds with a team season-best time of 10:03.50. That was the fifth-best time in school history.

Senior Kelly Miller (Aurora, Ohio/Twinsburg) and sophomore Allison Rober (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) had the only IUPUI women's victories. Miller took first in the 100 butterfly with a team season-best time of 1:00.37. She dominated the event as her winning time was more than 3.5 seconds better than the second place finisher. She also took second in the 200 fly. Her time of 2:11.90 was the sixth-quickest in school history. Those two podium finishes gave her 38 for her career and lifted her into fifth on IUPUI's all-time list.

Rober was victorious in the 200 breaststroke with a team season-best time of 2:32.19. She also took second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:17.42. Senior Lindsay Anderson (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) and freshman Elizabeth Scott (Nappanee, Ind./Bremen) each picked up a pair of second place finishes.

Anderson was second in both freestyle distance events. Her time of 11:08.11 in the 1000 free was the second-quickest in school history, narrowly missing her own school record by 0.30 seconds. Her time of 5:25.18 in the 500 free was the seventh-quickest ever at IUPUI.

Scott took second in both diving events. Her score of 224.00 in the one-meter was a team season-best score and sixth-most in school history. She also posted the 12th-best score in school history in the three-meter event with a score of 212.35 points.

Junior Amy Rowe (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) had two podium finishes, while freshmen Megan Hensley (Jeffersonville, Ind./Jeffersonville) and Victoria Wheeler (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) picked up one each.

Rowe was second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.34 and set a team season-best time of 2:22.03 in finishing third in 200 backstroke. Hensley and Wheeler took third in the 500 freestyle (5:36.55) and 100 freestyle (58.82), respectively.

IUPUI opens 2006 with competition in the Univ. of Indianapolis Invitational on Jan 6 and 7. Start time is 2 p.m. on Jan. 6 and 10 a.m. on Jan. 7.
