Heat Sheets for Day 1 Finals at Short Course Worlds: Seven Finals Open Up Competition

The first evening finals session at the Short Course World Championships in Abu Dhabi will feature six finals races, beginning with the men’s 400 freestyle and the women’s 200 freestyle. That men’s 400 saw Olympic gold medalist Ahmed Hafnaoui finish 10th in prelims and out of the top eight, while Austria’s Felix Aubock took the top seed in 3:37.91. Aubock, who tied for fourth in the event at the Olympics, was followed closely by Olympic bronze medalist Kieran Smith of the U.S.

Next up will be the women’s 200 free, which may be a closer dual than anticipated after Canada’s Rebecca Smith tied Olympic silver medalist Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong in prelims, and Smith will swim out of lane four in the final.

Check out the full heat sheet for the session here.

In the men’s 200 fly, Trenton Julian of the United States captured the top seed as he swims at any version of a World Championships for the first time. He and three other swimmers, South Africa’s Chad le Clos, Switzerland’s Noe Ponti and Estonia’s Kregor Zirk, all recorded 1:50s in the prelims.

Italy’s Ilaria Cusinato claimed lane four for the women’s 400 IM final, with Canada’s Tessa Cieplucha, the USA’s Melanie Margalis and Ireland’s Ellen Walshe right behind her. Olympic silver medalist Emma Weyant will be looming in lane eight.

Japan’s Daiya Seto will be the favorite in the men’s 200 IM final, but the USA’s Carson Foster finished just two tenths behind the Japanese star in prelims.

Finally, day one of Short Course Worlds will conclude with the 400 freestyle relays. The Netherlands claimed the top seed in the women’s relay, and Russia was first in the men’s, with the United States placing second in both heats.

Top seeds in the semifinals include Poland’s Kacper Stokowski in the men’s 100 back, Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson in the women’s 50 breast, the Netherlands’ Arno Kamminga in the men’s 100 breast and the USA’s Katharine Berkoff in the women’s 100 back.
