Flynn Southam And Exciting Next Gen Girls Headline 30-strong Aussie Dolphins Team For World Junior Championships In Israel

Four-time Commonwealth Games and World Short Course relay gold medallist Flynn Southam will be joined by the exciting “next gen” group of Aussie females in a 30-strong Australian Junior Dolphins Team named today for the 2023 World Junior Swimming Championships in Israel in September.

Headlining the girls will be 16-year-old St Peters Western schoolgirl Jaclyn Barclay – the youngest winner of an Australian Open Championship on the Gold Coast last week in the women’s 200m backstroke.

Australia will be represented by 17 females and 13 males – 18 from Queensland, in a team to be led by Head Coach Simon Cusack – the man who guided the careers of Australian super sisters Cate and Bronte Campbell.

Southam, the 17-year-old from Bond University Bull Sharks on the Queensland Gold Coast, emerged from last year’s Junior Pan Pacs in Hawaii with four gold medals – three of them individual wins in the 50,100 and 200m freestyle.

And that came after his senior team debut in the Commonwealth Games where he won three gold as a member of Australia’s gold medal-winning 4x100m and 4x200m and 4×100 mixed freestyle teams and before accumulating a haul of five medals including gold in the 4x50m freestyle from the December World Short Course Championships.

The Chris Mooney coached Southam has just emerged from a solid two weeks of racing with his Bond team mates at the Australian Age and Open Championships on the Gold Coast.

There he won the Age freestyle treble over 50m (22.40), 100m (48.91) and 200m (1:46.24) before his Open campaign which saw him finish a close-up second to Kai Taylor in the 200m freestyle (1:46.67) and third in both the 50m (22.40) and the 100m (48.53) freestyle behind Olympic gold and silver medallist Kyle Chalmers and Taylor.

Southam, who turns 18 on June 5, will be one of 15 members of the Australian team from last year’s Junior Pan Pacs who won 25 medals – eight of them gold with Southam joined again by Marcus Da Silva(Cranbrook, NSW) and Anders McAlpine (Chandler, QLD)  the trio forming the nucleus of the gold medal winning 4x200m freestyle relay who were also silver medallists in the 4x100m.

There are three swimmers from the Bond program with Southam joined by triple Age group breaststroke winner Gideon Burnes making his first national team and last year’s soul female winner from the Junior Pan Pacs, 50m freestyle winner, Milla Jansen.

Barclay and Jansen will be joined by Olivia Wunsch (Carlile, NSW), Jaimie de Lutiis (Wests Illawarra, NSW), and St Peters Western pair Amelia Weber and Jamie Perkins.

It was the Australian foursome of Wunsch, Weber, Perkins and Jansen who won 4x200m freestyle silver behind the US at last year’s Junior Pan Pacs.

“It was fantastic to see so many wonderful performances at this year’s (Australian Age and Open Championship) competition, it is a real credit to everyone involved in the sport and a great way to celebrate being back to an uninterrupted swimming programming after COVID” said Gary Barclay, General Manager, Performance Pathways.“We’re really looking forward to getting into camp and are excited by the depth of talent representing Australia on the world stage,” said Barclay.

The 2023 World Junior Championships will be swum in Netanya, Israel from the September 4-9, with the team departing for a Staging Camp in Paphos, Cyprus on August 25.
