Fiol Gets Eight-Year Ban For Second Doping Offence Involving Positive Test For Stanozolol
Olympian Mauricio Fiol Villanueva has been banned for eight years after testing positive for stanozolol as he prepared to return to competition following a four-year suspension for the same steroid.
The Peruvian, who was 25th in the 200 fly at the 2012 Olympics in London, tested positive on six occasions between 30 June and 17 September 2019, said governing body FINA.
Given it was his second doping violation, Fiol will now be banned until August 2027 when he will be 33, effectively ending his career.
Fiol came second in the 200 fly at the 2015 Pan-American Games but was subsequently stripped of the silver medal after his positive test which he stated was unintentional.
FINA said in a press release:
“On 30 June, 7 July, 12 July, 12 August, 1 September and 17 September 2019, doping controls were conducted on the swimmer Mauricio Fiol Villanueva (PER). In each case, the athlete was tested positive to the substance Stonozolol (Class S1.1A Exogenous Anabolic Androgenic Steroids).
“According to the decision of the FINA Doping Panel, Mr. Mauricio Fiol Villanueva has been found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation under FINA DC Rule 2.1 – presence of prohibited substance in an athlete’s sample. As this was his second anti-doping rule violation, he has been sanctioned with an (8) eight-year ineligibility period commencing on 3 August 2019, and ending at the conclusion of 2 August 2027.”
