About Swimming Technology Research (STR) Camps

At STR SpeedWeeks, swimmers undergo intensive technique instruction and analysis with Dr. Rod Havriluk, world-renowned biomechanist and swimming technique expert. Dr. Havriluk has been improving swimmers’ technique for more than 30 years and is internationally recognized for his approach to accelerating skill-learning and preventing shoulder injury. He recently presented at FINA, IOC, USAS, USMS, ASCA and ISCA conferences.

Swimmers receive individual feedback to improve technique and learn practice strategies in order to continue improving when they return to their normal training routine. The patented Aquanex analysis captures force data and underwater video to provide visual and quantitative technique data. This science-backed analysis is unlike anything else in the world of swimming, giving swimmers the tools to fine-tune their technique and make drastic time drops. Each SpeedWeek is limited to 12 swimmers to ensure maximum individual attention.

Unique Stroke Analysis

The mission of STR is to improve aquatic sports through applied research, using advanced technology, the principles of physics and the science of biomechanics. As part of fulfilling that mission, STR manufactures hardware and software and provides a wide variety of consulting services to individuals, teams and swimming federations.

STR’s approach to technique is unique in that our method of swimming is not based on the conventional wisdom derived from observation of champions. Instead, all the technique elements incorporated into the STR method were developed from the principles of physics, over 50 years of published research and data from many thousands of Aquanex trials.

Competitive swimming is a challenging sport – where winners are determined by a fraction of a second and the difference is a constantly evolving combination of technique, strength, training and personal motivation.

Joining that elite circle of winners – whether at an age group meet or a national event – has never been harder. That’s why you need an edge, an advantage that STR has been providing coaches, swimmers and triathletes for more than 20 years.

Deliberate Practice Strategies

In addition to the sound foundation for STR technique, our instructional methods incorporate deliberate practice (DP) strategies that help swimmers master technique elements quickly. The DP strategies are based on Dr. Anders Ericsson’s research findings about the practice components necessary to become an expert.

Most importantly, STR technique elements and learning strategies minimize the chance of injuries. STR president Dr. Havriluk has collaborated with Dr. Ted Becker (Former Head Trainer for the USA Olympic Swim Team) on numerous studies of shoulder stress.

Swimmers and coaches can take comfort in knowing that STR instruction and analysis methods are uniquely designed to help swimmers rapidly improve their technique while minimizing the risk of injury. Research results show that swimmers progress more from a short term (one week or one month) STR treatment than from a much longer term (one or two years) of traditional training.

This two-day clinic is directed toward swimmers who want to make a big improvement in a short amount of time. The SpeedWeekend format allows for a comprehensive presentation of optimal technique. Two strokes are presented in the morning classroom on each of the two days and then analyzed with Aquanex+Video in the afternoon session. This clinic will provide swimmers with a great deal of individual feedback, numerous opportunities to practice short swims without fatigue and a complete analysis of each stroke. This clinic is limited to 12 participants to ensure plenty of individual attention for incomparable progress.

The SpeedWeek format provides a thorough treatment of swimming technique:
  • Critical cues for head, torso, and leg orientation
  • Key checkpoints in the arm cycle
  • Pptimal nonbreathing and breathing head positions
  • Strategies for “focused” practice to continue progress after SpeedWeekend
  • Aquanex+Video analysis that pinpoints critical positions in each stroke
  • Tips for training and racing
