El Salvador’s Marcelo Acosta Among Handful of Meet-Record Setters at Central American and Caribbean Games

VERACRUZ – A truckload of meet records fell during the Central American and Caribbean Games tonight in Veracruz, Mexico.

Although the top stars are not tapered for the meet, and there have been some complaints about the starting blocks, swimmers are still putting up plenty of meet marks here in Mexico.

El Salvador’s Marcelo Acosta won the men’s 1500-meter free in 15:22.43. That’s under the meet record of 15:37.59 set by Venezuela’s Alejandro Gomez in 2010.  Colombia’s Mateo De Angulo also cleared the meet record with a 15:26.71 for second, while Gomez wound up third tonight in 15:37.85.

Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace of the Bahamas blasted her way to a meet record in the women’s 50-meter fly with a time of 26.46.  That swim lowered her previous mark of 26.92 from 2010.  Colombia’s Carolina Colorado touched second in 27.40 with Venezuela’s Jeserik Pinto placing third in 27.54.

Venezuela’s Carlos Claverie touched out Colombia’s Jorge Mario Murillo, 1:01.76 to 1:01.90, for the men’s 100-meter breast title.  Both cleared the meet record of 1:02.07 set by Edgar Crespo back in 2010.  Crespo, meanwhile, placed third tonight in 1:02.45.

During prelims, Mexico’s Maria Fernanda Gonzalez tied the meet record in the women’s 100-meter back with a 1:02.26. That matched Rita Medrano’s 2010 mark set in Mayaguez.  Tonight, Gonzalez crushed the record with a 1:01.57.  Colombia’s Carolina Colorado finished second in 1:03.00 for her second podium of the night, while Guatemala’s Gisela Morales finished third in 1:03.81.

Another meet record tumbled in the men’s 200-meter IM as Colombia’s Omar Pinzon won in 2:02.07.  That swim clipped Bradley Ally’s mark of 2:02.32 from 2010.  El Salvador’s Rafael Alfaro placed second in 2:03.99 with Mexico’s Ezequiel Trujillo earning third in 2:04.20.

Venezuela’s Andreina Pinto won her second medal of the meet with a 2:00.42 in the women’s 200-meter free.  That’s just off Claudia Poll’s 2006 meet record of 2:00.19. Yesterday, Pinto won the 400 free in 4:11.65. Colombia’s Jessica Maria Camposano touched second in 2:00.68 with Cuba’s Elisbet Gamez placing third in 2:02.08.
