Diana Nyad’s Next Big Swim: 48 Hours in 50-Meter Pool in New York City

KEY WEST, Florida, September 3. LESS than 24 hours after completing her epic swim from Cuba to Florida, Diana Nyad already has her sights set on her next Extreme Dream, which will be done in front of hundreds of people instead of a small team in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.

In a press conference today, Nyad announced that her next marathon swim will take place in New York City, as she plans to swim for 48 nonstop hours in a 50-meter pool. Nyad, 64, said the temporary pool will be designed by Myrtha Pools, which has become the leading company for creating temporary pools. The company designed the pools for the past three U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials, as well as the 2011 and 2013 world championships.

The swim will take place on October 8, near the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, which devastated New York City and surrounding cities last year. Nyad called the upcoming event “Nyad Swim for Relief,” but did not announce any details on fundraising opportunities. She also said she is looking for celebrities to join her during the swim, and personally invited CNN journalist Sanjay Gupta to take part in the event.

Also in the press conference, Nyad said it cost about $1 million to make the Cuba-to-Florida swim happen, with sponsors such as Secret deodorant and donations from the public helping to fund the endeavor.
