Connor Jaeger Breaks Erik Vendt’s 15-Year-Old 1500 Free American Record
USA’s Connor Jaeger held off world-record holder Gregorio Paltrinieri to break a 15-year-old American and U.S. Open record in the men’s 1500-meter free at the 2015 Duel in the Pool.
After battling back and forth in a head-to-head matchup, Jaeger got his hand on the wall first with a 14:19.29. That swim blasted Erik Vendt’s 15-year-old record of 14:31.02 set for USC at the 2000 NCAA Championships.
That moved Jaeger up to sixth all time in the race’s history.
Paltrinieri, who just set the world record with a 14:08.06 at the 2015 European Championships last week, managed to take second in 14:20.24. That time still stands as the 10th fastest performance ever.
USA’s Michael McBroom turned in a third-place time of 14:38.92 to round out scoring.
