Claire Weinstein Chasing Breakthrough Performances in Middle-Distance Freestyle
Claire Weinstein Chasing Breakthrough Performances in Middle-Distance Freestyle
Among the Olympians scheduled to race at this week’s TYR Pro Series stop in Sacramento is Claire Weinstein, still a teenager but already a longtime staple for Team USA at the international level. Is the 19-year-old’s best season on the horizon? There is plenty of reason for that type of optimism.
Weinstein is coming off a strong freshman year at Cal-Berkeley, a campaign that was highlighted by an NCAA title in the 500-yard freestyle. Her initial collegiate season also featured a runnerup finish in the 1650 freestyle and an eighth-place effort in the 200 freestyle. For the summer, Weinstein has returned to Nevada, where she is training under her longtime coach, Ron Aitken, and alongside former training partner, Bella Sims. The work in Las Vegas will be geared toward having Weinstein at her sharpest for the Pan Pacific Championships in Southern California in August.
Despite her youth, Weinstein has been a member of every major American roster since the 2022 World Championships in Budapest. At last year’s World Championships in Singapore, where Weinstein was affected by the stomach illness that ravaged the American squad, she earned a bronze medal in the 200 freestyle. Still, it seems her brightest days are ahead, significant breakthroughs awaiting.
Weinstein currently sits 16th in the all-time rankings for the 200 freestyle, a best of 1:54.67 propelling her to the podium at last year’s Worlds. Consistency has been a trademark of Weinstein’s through the years, evident in the six sub-1:55 markers she has put down in the 200 free. Yet, her talent suggests a 1:53 outing is within her grasp, particularly considering her career best was produced amid adverse conditions.
More, Weinstein has elevated her status in the 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle, the secondary disciplines of her program. At last year’s National Champs, Weinstein just missed breaking the four-minute barrier in the 400 freestyle, going 4:00.05. Illness forced her to withdraw from the event at Worlds, and delayed her entry into three-something territory. Membership to the sub-4:00 club figures to be attained this summer. Additionally, she has been 8:19.67 in the 800 freestyle, an event that could witness further growth in the near future.
As well as Weinstein performed last summer, factors beyond her control likely did not allow the middle-distance ace to showcase her true talent. But in impressive fashion, the Team USA veteran dug deep and still managed to flourish at Worlds. Now, with Pan Pacs rapidly approaching, Weinstein will have another opportunity to put her skill on display, and it could be a meet that bumps the teen to another level.
