US-based Australian Olympic hope Calypso Sheridan is zooming into her home program 15,000km away in Brisbane as athletes worldwide connect in unprecedented fashion to best replicate their training programs.

The 20-year-old attending Chicago’s Northwestern University, has linked up with her Brisbane Grammar School (BGS) team mates, including fellow Tokyo chance, backstroking prodigy Minna Atherton for regular online strength and conditioning and yoga sessions – from her own backyard in Illinois.

Under the direction of home coach, BGS High Performance Head Coach and 2018 ASCTA Coach Of The Year, David Lush, his squad in Brisbane and other localities throughout Queensland now have the emerging IM star in their “online” line-up.

When her Brisbane team mates Zoom in at 7am, Calypso is limbering up at 4pm in the US.

“Given the power of the internet it has allowed our swimmers to log in no matter where they are in the world,” Lush said.

“We had our US-based medley swimmer Calypso Sheridan (at school in Northwestern) who (comes on line) at 4pm in the afternoon in Chicago, at the back of her house there, which is great for her to join in and stay in touch.”

Lush, like all of his coaching counterparts, are juggling the social networking concepts especially with his weekly Zoom sessions for strength and conditioning and yoga classes along with any available backyard pool time.

He has broadened the squad inclusions from his High Performance Squad to his growing National Age group – extending his Zoom attendees to over 50.

Knowing most of the online communication was one direction, Lush joined the Zoom generation, which has become the buzzword of the COVID-19 and played a key role in isolation survival and communication.

“With Zoom it gives you a point of difference with regular banter and a continued sense of community, killing two birds with the one stone,” said Lush, knowing the education process is so important.

“Our Zoom week now consists of Strength and Conditioning (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and Yoga (Tuesday and Thursday).

“It is important to stay connected and engaged physically but also for mental health and well being as well as physical literacy comprehension.

“They are swimming in their own backyard pools, their parents pools with a stationary cord with the key thing not being fitness but for maintaining that feel of the water

“We started with 12 swimmers in our National HP squad and we have rolled it out to our wider Grammar Community with 45 swimmers in our National Age program

“The athletes have given it a positive tick of approval, staying engaged with their team mates in the HP squad and what it does for our Grammar community is to provide that point of difference.”

Calypso Sheridan, one of the real finds of the 2019 NCAAs, has set her sights on the 200 and 400IMs, when she returns for next year’s deferred Olympic Trials.
