Chad Le Clos Cracks World’s Top 5 in 200 Fly at Mare Nostrum

There were a number of impressive swims at the first of two nights of the Monaco stop of the Mare Nostrum.

Chad Le Clos of South Africa recorded the world’s fifth fastest 200 butterfly with a 1:54.80. Hungary’s Tamas Kenderesi swam the sixth best time with a 1:55.11, just off his own fourth 1:54.79. Evgeny Koptelov was third in 1:57.88.

Katinka Hosszu raced to a win in the 400 IM this evening with a 4:34.14. In just the past two weeks, she also won that event at European Championships and the Romanian International. That is the fifth fastest time in the world this year, in an event where Hosszu already owns the fastest mark. Jordis Steinegger of Austria was second in 4:49.50 and third went to France’s Lisa Pou in 5:01.68.

Hosszu came back for another victory in the 200 backstroke, stopping the clock in 2:09.58. Second went to Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe in 2:10.97. Iceland’s Eyglo Oks Gustafsdottir was third in 2:13.80.

Germany’s Marco Koch is the current world leader in the 200 breaststroke. Tonight he touched in 2:09.45, the eighth best time this year. Jarred chad Crous of South Africa won silver in 2:11.67 and bronze went to Feilian Mao of China in 2:12.91.

Canada’s Kierra Smith won the 100 breaststroke just last weekend at the Mel Zajac Invite. She topped the podium again today in 1:08.94. Jinq-En Phee of Malaysia finished second in 1:09.18 and Spain’s Marina Garcia Urzainqui completed the podium with a 1:09.47.

Devon Myles William Brown of South Africa won a close men’s 400 freestyle, stopping the clock in 3:49.96, ahead of Welson wee sheng Sim of Malaysia in 3:50.66. Marwan El Kamassh of Egypt earned bronze with a 3:52.42.

Russia’s Andrey Grechin stopped the clock in 49.03 to lead the men’s 100 freestyle. Steffen Deibler of Germany and France’s Clement Mignon touched just behind in 49.15 and 49.17.

The top four women in the 100 butterfly finished under a minute. Svetlana Chimrova of Russia was first in 58.33. Liliana Szilagyi of Hungary touched second in 58.80 and France’s Marie Wattel finished third with a 58.87.

In 54.07 Jan Philip Glania of Germany topped the podium in the men’s 100 backstroke. Camille Lacourt of France followed in 54.78 while Australia’s Benjamin Treffers touched third in 55.40.

Germany’s Philip Heintz won the men’s 200 IM in 2:00.56, over a second in front of Switzerland’s Jeremy Desplanches in 2:01.73. Marcin Cieslak of Poland was third with a 2:02.09.

Somehow the women 200 free is missing. Charlotte Bonet won it in 1:56.75, Katinka was second in 1:56.83 and Lisa Zaiser got the bronze with 2:01.28.
