Chad Le Clos Clocks Meet Record; Katinka Hosszu Versatile Again at Mare Nostrum Day 2

There was another session of impressive swimming in Monaco Sunday evening, in the final session of the first stop of Mare Nostrum.

Chad Le Clos clocked a meet record 51.58 in the 100 butterfly. That time ties him for seventh in the world this year, matching Joseph Schooling‘s time from the Longhorn Aquatics Elite Invite on Friday. In 52.11 Steffen Deibler of Germany was second and Russia’s Evgeny Koptelov was third in 52.40.

Paul Biedermann posted a dominant effort in the 200 freestyle. The German clocked a 1:46.71. Le Close was second in 1:49.28, just .01 ahead of Welson Sim of Malaysia in 1:49.29.

Katinka Hosszu was a busy lady again tonight. She destroyed the competition in the 400 freestyle, stopping the clock in 4:06.65. Canada’s Taylor Ruck was a 4:14.20 for second and Yuxi Chen of China completed the podium in 4:16.13. After cracking a minute in prelims, Hosszu came just short, but still won the 100 backstroke in 1:00.10. Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry was second in 1:00.67 and Anastasiia Fesikova of Russia finished third (1:00.70).

Hosszu and Coventry again finished 1-2 in the 200 IM. Hosszu clocked a 2:11.11 to Coventry’s 2:13.45. Lisa Zaiser of Austria touched third in 2:13.70.

Canada’s Kierra Smith swept the weekend’s breaststrokes with a 2:26.54 200 tonight. In second was France’s Camille Dauba (2:28.51). Spain’s Marina Garcia Urzainqui earned bronze in 2:28.83.

Charlotte Bonnet of France won the women’s 100 freestyle with a 53.80, the 16th best time in the world this year. Belarus’ Aliaksandra Herasimenia swam a 54.39 for second while Canada’s Rebecca Smith completed the podium in 55.54.

Feilian Mao of China was the top finisher in the men’s 400 IM with his 4:18.94. In 4:22.49 was Canada’s Luke Reilly while Peter Bernek of Hungary touched third in 4:24.35.

Liliana Szilagyi of Hungary took the 200 butterfly crown with a 2:09.06. Svetlana Chimrova of Russia finished second in 2:10.78. Rounding out the podium was Melinda Novoszath of Hungary in 2:11.52.

Jan Philip Glania of Germany stopped the clock in 1:58.77 to take the men’s 200 backstroke. France’s Geoffroy Mathieu swam a 2:00.87 for second and third was Yan Jin of China in 2:01.71.

Vsevolod Zanko of Russia touched in 1:00.74 on his way to 100 breaststroke victory. Jarred Crous of South Africa was just behind in 1:00.99. Bronze went to Germany’s Marco Koch (1:01.72).
