Canada Has Strong Showing at Montreal World Cup Diving Stop

Canada showed well at the second World Aquatics World Cup Diving Stop in Montreal last weekend, winning four medals, including silver in the team competition.

Pamela Ware led the way with silver in the women’s 3-meter diving and bronze in 3-meter synchro paired with Mia Vallee. Ware, Caeli McKay, Bryden Hattie and Nathan Zsombor-Murray combined for team silver.

Zsombor-Murray was part of arguably the event of the meet, the men’s 10M, in which three divers top 500 points. He ended up third in a tight battle with Japan’s Rikuto Tamai, who edged him by less than six points. Like the other eight events of the weekend, it was won by China, Yang Hao scoring 580.25 points.

China won nine gold medals but wasn’t as dominant as at other stops. Only one event resulted in a Chinese 1-2, with Quan Hongchan (458.20 points) leading Chen Yuxi (438.90) in the 10-meter platform event. Chen was the only minor medal won by the Chinese delegation.

Hongchan and Yuxi easily won platform synchro on the women’s side. Chen Yiwen, the 3-meter women’s champ, teamed with Chang Yani to win a surprisingly close synchro gold.

Wang Zhongyuan and Yang each won two men’s gold medals. Wang scored 556.75 to win 3-meter by 91.50 points, then joined Long Daoyi to dominate synchro. Yang emerged in men’s platform and joined Lian Junjie for synchro gold. China won the team event with Chen Yiwen, Wang, Chen Yuxi and Yang scoring 489.25 to best the Canadians by 34 points.

The United States returned with a pair of medals on the women’s side. Sarah Bacon scored 357.85 points on 3-meter springboard to edge Chang Yani for bronze. She was 46 points behind Chen Yiwen and seven behind Ware. (American Hailey Hernandez was sixth in the event.) Bacon teamed with Kassidy Cook to finish second in synchro, scoring 315.08 to put a scare into the leading Chinese duo, just 14 points back.

Great Britain took home three synchro medals. That includes Andrea Spendolini Sirieix, who took bronze in women’s platform and teamed with Lois Toulson for silver in synchro. Anthony Harding and Jack Laugher earned silver in men’s 3-meter platform.
