TEMPE – Missy Franklin and Elizabeth Pelton won three individual events apiece and Josh Prenot won two to lead the University of California swimming and diving teams to a sweep of Arizona State at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on Friday afternoon. The Cal women’s team came out on top 197.5-102.5, while the men earned a 163-130 win.

The Golden Bear women captured 12 of the 16 events, finishing 1-2-3 in the 200 back, 200 fly, 200 IM and 500 free. Half of the team’s wins came from Franklin and Pelton, as Franklin cruised to wins in the 100 back (54.30), 500 free (4:52.38) and 200 IM (2:01.76), and Pelton posted a two-second victory in the 200 free (1:48.50), a four-second win in the 200 back (1:56.15) and an eight-tenth win in the 100 fly (54.30).

Rachel Bootsma also had a strong showing for the Bears, winning the 50 free in 23.47 and contributing legs on both of Cal’s winning relays. She joined Marina Garcia, Farida Osman and Kaylin Bing to win the opening 200 medley relay in a tight battle with Arizona State, 1:41.27 to 1:41.36. Bootsma, Bing, Kristen Vredeveld and Rachael Acker then closed out the meet with a win in the 400 free relay at 3:23.89.

Cierra Runge (1000 free, 9:54.64), Celina Li (200 fly, 2:01.26) and Camille Cheng (100 free, 50.66) also recorded wins for Cal. Arizona State dominated the diving and breaststroke events, as Hailey Casper swept both the 1-meter (313.80) and 3-meter (349.05) and Jorie Caneta (100 breast, 1:02.75) and Tory Houston (200 breast, 2:16.81) topped both breaststroke heats.

On the men’s side, Cal’s Josh Prenot got to the wall first in the 100 breast (55.32) and 200 back (1:46.59) to lead the Bears to their 19th consecutive dual meet victory, dating back to the 2011-2012 season. The Bears picked up wins in nine of the 16 events in a well-balanced meet that saw seven different swimmers record individual wins.

Ryan Murphy and Justin Lynch teamed up with Chuck Katis and Tyler Messerschmidt to win the opening 200 medley relay in 1:27.67, before Murphy (200 IM, 1:47.10) and Lynch (200 fly, 1:49.17) recorded wins of their own later in the meet.

Long Gutierrez (1000 free, 9:24.38), Will Hamilton (200 free, 1:39.18), Kyle Gornay (100 back, 49.60) and Adam Hinshaw (500 free, 4:30.11) registered the remaining first place finishes for Cal.

The Sun Devils dominated the diving portion of the meet, sweeping all four events as David Hoffer joined Hailey Casper as a double-event winner with scores of 331.80 in the 1-meter and 393.30 in the 3-meter.

Tadas Duskinas (50 free, 20.97) and Thomaz Martins (100 free, 45.91) gave ASU a sweep of the sprint freestyle events as well with a combined margin of victory of only .06. Duskinas also won the 100 fly later in the meet, touching out Cal’s Long Gutierrez by .03, 48.84 to 48.87.

Christian Lorenz cruised to a win in the 200 breast at 2:01.54, while Duskinas and Martins joined Pat Park and Barkley Perry to post the top 400 free relay time at 3:02.16.
