Cal Promotes Noah Yanchulis to Associate Head Coach; Maya Geringer Named an Assistant

The California swimming & diving team has made changes to its coaching staff as announced by Director of Swimming & Diving Dave Durden on Monday.

Noah Yanchulis has been promoted to Associate Head Coach and Cal alumna Maya Geringer has returned to Berkeley as an assistant coach.

“Noah has become an invaluable member of our program,” Durden said. “He has consistently embraced new responsibilities and played an integral role in helping our student-athletes succeed at both the NCAA Championships and on the international stage. His leadership, technical expertise and commitment to athlete development have had a tremendous impact on our team, and I’m excited to continue working alongside him as we prepare for the LA 2028 Olympic quad.”

Yanchulis recently completed his third season with the Golden Bears. Since arriving in Berkeley, he has helped guide the men’s program to two NCAA runner-up finishes and six individual and relay national championships. He has also played a key role in the resurgence of the women’s program, helping the Bears earn their highest NCAA finish in five years with a fourth-place finish at the 2026 NCAA Championships. The season was highlighted by freshman Claire Weinstein capturing the NCAA title in the 500-yard freestyle while setting a new program record.

Beyond his collegiate success, Yanchulis served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2025 World Championships in Singapore, helping guide American athletes to a successful performance on the international stage.

Geringer joined Cal’s coaching staff near the end of last season following an outstanding collegiate career. She competed for the Golden Bears as a graduate student during the 2024-25 season after earning four CSCAA Scholar All-America honors at Ohio State. During her lone season in Berkeley, she earned All-ACC honors and First-Team All-America recognition in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a fifth-place finish at the 2025 NCAA Championships in a personal-best time of 15:48.27. She also earned Second-Team All-America honors in the 500-yard freestyle after placing 14th.

“Maya has already made a tremendous impression on our team,” Durden said. “She brings great energy, a passion for teaching and a genuine investment in helping our student-athletes grow both in and out of the pool. As a former Golden Bear, she understands the standard of excellence that defines our program, and I’m excited to have her on our staff as we continue building toward LA 2028.”

In addition to Yanchulis’ promotion and Geringer’s hiring, Cal will soon begin a national search for an assistant swimming coach to complete the program’s coaching staff.
