Brittany MacLean Dominates In Georgia Victory

The Georgia Bulldogs (No. 4 men, No. 1 women) continued to roll on Saturday against a strong Tennessee program (No. 12 men, No. 12 women).

The Georgia women improved their record to 8-0, trouncing Tennessee 173.5-121.5. The Bulldogs took the men’s meet by a score of 165-135.

Georgia got off to a hot start in the 200-yard medley relay, beating Tennessee by only 13-hundredths of a second. The Bulldog team of backstroker Olivia Smoliga, breaststroker Emily Cameron, butterflier Kylie Stewart and freestyler Meaghan Raab touched in 1:39.49.

The Volunteers took the men’s race. The team of backstroker Sean Lehane, breaststroker Peter Stevens, butterflier Tyler Mills and freestyler Kyle Decoursey touched in 1:26.11. Stevens led the relay, splitting a 23.03 in his 50-yard breaststroke swim.

Brittany MacLean had a monster day for the Georgia women. The 21-year-old scored 27 individual points, winning the 200 (1:46.29), 500 (4:45.65) and 1000-yard freestyle (9:38.73).

Taylor Dale and Michael Trice led the Bulldog men, both winning two individual events. Dale took the 100-yard backstroke (46.72) and 100-yard butterfly (47.15) and Trice picked up wins in the 50 (19.79) and 100-yard freestyle (44.25).

Liam Stone was the Volunteers’ top scorer. Stone placed first in the 1-meter (355.13) and 3-meter diving competition (439.73), scoring 18 points. Sam McHugh also had a strong showing, winning the 500-yard freestyle (4:25.73) and finishing second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:46.35).

On the women’s side, Colleen Callahan led the Tennessee team, scoring 14 points. Callahan won the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.38), finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.39) and was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.80).

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Georgia women swam as an exhibition team. Though the win did not count, the Bulldogs posted the event’s fastest time. Kylie Stewart, Olivia Smoliga, Brittany MacLean and Hali Flickinger touched the wall in 3:19.67.

The Bulldogs took the men’s event with a time of 2:56.75. Their team consisted of Matias Koski, Dale, Pace Clark and Trice.

The Volunteers are back in action on Jan. 30 against Florida. Georgia swims again on Jan. 30. The Bulldogs will host Wisconsin.
