Azura Florida Aquatic Club Extends Lead in Team Standings at Plantation Sectionals

PLANTATION – Azura Florida Aquatic Club extended its lead in the team standings, while several swimmers added wins to their collection as the third day of racing wrapped up tonight at the Plantation Sectionals meet in Florida.

After a couple of top three finishes already this meet, Carolina Colorado made it to the top step of the podium in the women’s 100 back final, edging Greater Holyoke’s Erin Voss by just one one-hundredth, 1:01.75 to 1:01.76. Seacoast Swimming Association’s Kyra Sarazen finished comfortably in third at 1:03.64.

Last night, Club Seminole’s Pavel Sankovich finished second in the 100 fly, and tonight he one-upped that performance with a win in the men’s 100 back. Sankovich touched in 56.47 to take down Auburn Aquatics’ Albert Subirats, who touched in 56.71. Blue Dolfins’ Zachary Poti swam a 57.80 to round out the top three.

The women’s 50 breast final featured a great race between South Florida’s Valentina Artemeva and Gator Swim Club’s Hrafnhildur Luthersdottir. After qualifying first in prelims by .07, Artemeva extended her margin of victory to one tenth, touching out Luthersdottir, 31.66 to 31.76. Azura Florida’s Patricia Casellas got to the wall third in 33.27.

Last night’s 100 breast champion, Auburn Aquatics’ Felipe Lima, went two-for-two in the breaststroke events with a 27.93 in the 50 breast tonight. Lima had a solid cushion over Jorge Murillo Valdes, who claimed second in 28.63. Azura Florida’s Carlos Herrera picked up third with a 29.41.

In the women’s 50 fly, Club Seminole’s Sviatlana Khakhlova ousted Olympian Claire Donahue by only .01, 26.85 to 26.86, for the victory. Sandrine Mainville emerged from a tightly bunched group to finish third in 27.21.

Meanwhile, Poland’s Pawel Korzeniowski scored a half second victory in the men’s sprint fly final, topping the championship heat in 24.04 to knock off Auburn Aquatics’ Albert Subirats (24.54). Mateo Gonzalez of Azura Florida dropped four tenths from prelims to take third in 25.21.

Gator Swim Club’s Hrafnhildur Luthersdottir rebounded from a second place showing in the women’s 50 breast with a commanding victory in the 200 IM. Luthersdottir touched first in 2:15.41, more than four seconds in front of Greater Holyoke’s Erin Voss (2:19.61). Seacoast’s Kyra Sarazen earned another top three finish with her 2:21.81 for third.

Former University of Florida standout and Gator Swim Club swimmer Marcin Cieslak used a strong freestyle leg to pull away from the field and touch first in the men’s 200 IM final with a 2:02.55. Club Seminole’s Pavel Sankovich, who led by nearly two seconds after the breaststroke leg, fell off the pace and wound up second in 2:02.70, while Phoenix Swimming’s Brian Poon claimed third in 2:05.65.

A pair of ladies cracked 26 in the women’s 50 free final, led by Sandrine Mainville, who clocked in at 25.62 for the win. Michelle Williams got to the wall second in 25.91, while Coral Springs’ Arlene Semeco and Club Seminole’s Sviatlana Khakhlova tied for third with matching 26.07s.

Auburn Aquatics teammates Marcelo Chierighini and Renzo Tjon A Joe made their way to the top of the podium in the men’s sprint free final, with Chierighini stopping the clock at 22.97 and Tjon A Joe touching in 23.14. Poland’s Pawel Korzeniowski finished in the top three for the second time in the session with a 23.30.

Gator Swim Club’s Andreina Pinto won her third event of the meet in the women’s 400 free, dominating the race and winning by over 12 seconds with a 4:12.56. AquaKids Sharks’ Mary Smutny finished a distant second in 4:24.95, while Makos Aquatics’ Alena Kraus rounded out the top three in 4:26.19.

Mateo De Angulo of Club Seminole had a huge swim in finals of the men’s 400 free, dropping more than eight seconds from prelims to blow by the rest of the field with a 3:57.50. Azura Florida’s Franco Lupoli, who had posted the top qualifying time of 4:02.56, dropped three seconds but still wound up second in 3:59.65. Gator Swim Club’s Alejandro Gomez dropped four seconds from prelims and finished third in 4:01.32.

Amanda Tipton, Caitlin Ahern, Elizabeth Zubero and Allison Kopas gave Swim Fort Lauderdale a first place finish in the women’s 400 medley relay with their 4:24.65. Gator Swim Club’s Kahra Williams, Hrafnhildur Luthersdottir, Hannah Burns and Lindsey Trematerra swam a 4:27.37 to take second ahead of Seacoast’s Kyra Sarazen, Julia Degregorio, Isabel Reis and Madalyn Redding (4:28.67).

In the men’s medley relay, Azura Florida’s Fernando Alatorre, Marco Guarente, Mateo Gonzalez and Carlos Herrera got to the wall about a second and a half ahead of Bluefish Swim Club’s Michael Choate, Joshua Zimmt, Maxwell Miranda and Nicholas Brown, 3:54.18 to 3:55.60. Blue Dolfins’ Zachary Poti, Benjamin Whitty, Noah Hensley and John Fulginiti claimed third in 3:56.60.
