The draft programme has been released for next week’s British Championships with Adam Peaty lining up in the 200m breaststroke.

The six-day meet at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, runs from 5-11 April and will act as trials for the World Championships in Budapest in June.

The team will comprise a maximum of 30 swimmers with a maximum of two selections per individual event and one relay team per event.

It’s the second of a two-stage selection policy with the first drawing on performances at Tokyo 2020 where those athletes who achieved a top-six finish in an individual final are selected for Budapest.

If more than one athlete achieved a top-six finish, the highest-placed swimmer is selected to the team for the event, with the other finisher selected to the team only.

For instance, Olympic champion Tom Dean will be selected to the 200 free with Tokyo silver medallist Duncan Scott fighting for the remaining place with fellow relay gold medallists Matt Richards, James Guy and Calum Jarvis.

Selected for events:

Tom Dean (200 free)

Adam Peaty (100br)

Duncan Scott (200IM)

Kathleen Dawson (100 back)

Abbie Wood (200IM)

Dan Jervis (1500 free)

Luke Greenbank (200 back)

Max Litchfield (400IM)

Ben Proud (50 free)

James Wilby (100 and 200br)

The policy states that relay medal-winners are also selected although this is restricted to swimmers who appeared in the final and not heat swimmers, meaning no preselection for Freya Anderson or Calum Jarvis who swam prelims in the victorious mixed medley and men’s 4×200 relays.

Anna Hopkin, Richards and Guy are selected though.

Peaty will compete in all the breaststroke events after announcing his intention to take on the four-length race in an interview in January.

The three-time Olympic champion had his first outing over 200m since 2016 at the FFN Golden Tour in Marseille earlier this month where he finished fourth in 2:14.48.

Second that day in 2:11.56 was Greg Butler, who – like Peaty – has been coached by Mel Marshall at City of Derby and now Loughborough.

Peaty has the sixth-swiftest entry time in the 200 headed by James Wilby in 2:07.91.

Scott is entered in the 50m breaststroke, 100m free, 200m free, 200IM and 400IM although Renshaw is noticeable by her absence and we have reached out for comment.

Athletes must place first or second in the event and their times must equal or better the qualification marks set by British Swimming.
