ACC Saturday Recap: Georgia Tech, Virginia Earn Victories

In Saturday’s ACC swimming and diving action, Georgia Tech took down Northwestern on the second day of back-to-back dual meets in the midwest, while Virginia, Pitt and Louisville each completed two-day meets.

Georgia Tech’s women beat the Wildcats 153-147, while the men dominated and finished ahead by a score of 209 to 85.

Iris Wang paced the Georgia Tech women with wins in the 100 (50.42) and 200 free (1:49.54), and she was second in the 50 free (23.40). Cami Hidalgo won three-meter diving with 301.65 points, Julia Shuford won the 200 breast in 2:19.50, and freshman Cat Macgregor won the 200 IM in 2:04.44.

But the Yellow Jacket women needed a win in the final event of the meet to secure victory, and they got it. Wang, Chloe MillerSara Gilbert and Kaitlin Kitchens finished the 400 free relay in 3:24.95, almost four seconds ahead of Northwestern.

On the men’s side, freshman Caio Pumputis picked up a trio of wins: 100 breast (54.45), 100 free (45.32) and 200 IM (1:52.34), and he also anchored the winning 400 free relay. Matt Casillas won one-meter (320.03) and three-meter (329.03) diving, and freshman Franco Reyes picked up win in the 50 free (20.66) and 100 fly (48.95).

Virginia & LSU at Pitt

Todd DeSorbo’s Virginia Cavaliers remained undefeated after two weeks of competition with sweeps over both Pitt and LSU, while the Panthers were also victorious in both the women’s and men’s meets over the Tigers.

Jen Marrkand, who won the 100 fly on day one of the two-day meet, added wins in the 200 IM (2:01.57) and 200 fly (1:58.02) for the Cavaliers. Teammates Caitlin Cooper (50 free, 22.63), Mary Claire Tansill (200 breast, 2:15.27) and Paige Madden (200 free, 1:49.40) also came out on top in individual events.

For the Virginia men, Joe Clark (100 back, 48.50) and Jacob Wells (200 breast, 2:01.62) produced individual wins.

For Pittsburgh, Amanda Richey won the 500 free in 4:52.68, adding to her 1000 free win from Friday, while teammate Valerie Daigneault took first in the 100 back in 55.38.

For the men, Brian Lovasik won both the 500 free (4:26.73) and 200 free (1:37.92) after winning the 100 free Friday. Samy Helmbacher, meanwhile, won the 200 IM in 1:47.52 for his second win of the meet. Pitt’s Luke Smutny edged UVA’s Zach Fong for the 200 fly win, 1:47.83 to 1:47.88.

Michigan at Louisville

Louisville could not muster up much of a challenge for Michigan in the points race on day two of their dual meet, and the Cardinals lost by scores of 220-127 in the women’s meet and 230-119 in the men’s.

Nick Albiero picked up his second backstroke win of the meet, winning the 200-yard event in 1:46.11 after taking first in the 100 on Friday, but he was the only Louisville winner in the entire men’s meet.

Mallory Comerford took the win in the 50 free in 22.90, and she finished second in the 200 free in 1:47.13, behind Michigan’s Siobhan Haughey (1:44.58). Rachael Bradford-Feldman won the women’s 400 IM for Louisville in 4:14.05, and Molly Fears took first in one-meter diving (279.60). Those were Louisville’s only wins on the day.
