ACC Championships, Day 3 Prelims: Olympian Showdown Set in 100 Fly

The women’s 100 butterfly at the ACC Championships on Thursday won’t include the ACC record holder or long-course world record holder. And yet, that only ups the intrigue.

Even without Gretchen Walsh in the event, the ACC Championships produced three NCAA A cuts Thursday morning, led by Claire Curzan’s time of 49.83. Tori Huske followed, with Alex Walsh third.

Thursday’s night session includes women’s 1-meter diving. The team scores at the conclusion of Wednesday’s session:

Women’s 400 individual medley

Katie Grimes set the pace in the 400 IM, with a time of 4:02.57. She ensures that Virginia has the top two seeds, with Leah Hayes second.

Stanford could make a move, with three in the A final, led by Caroline Bricker in third. Ella Bathhurst of Virginia got a third Cavalier in the final, with all eight under 4:10.

Men’s 400 individual medley

Tommy Bried led the way with a time of 3:39.28. He was nearly two seconds up on Louisville teammate Gregg Enoch. There is plenty of variety in the A final, with Ben Delmar of UNC third and Massimo Matteazzi of Pitt fourth.

Women’s 100 butterfly

Claire Curzan led the way with a time of 49.83. She’s followed by Tori Huske in 49.94. Both have been in the 49s previously this year.

Alex Walsh’s drop was the biggest, going 50.35 for third. She had been 51.98 in season. The other swimmer in the 50s, Leah Shackley of NC State, was there again in 50.87 for fourth. Guilia Carvalho of Miami got in there in fifth.

The one exclusion was Gabi Albiero of Louisville, who went 51.57 and missed the A final by .07 seconds.

Men’s 100 butterfly

The women’s 100 fly is plenty intriguing, but so is the men’s 100 fly, featuring a pair of NCAA champions. Andrei Minakov led the way in 44.31. The 2023 champion, Youssef Ramadan, was tied for third in 45.09 with Dare Rose. Second was Michel Arkhangelskiy of Florida State.

Mario Molla Yanes of Virginia Tech tied Stanford’s Kaihan Gu for eighth in 45.32, then blasted a 44.87 for the spot in the final.

Women’s 200 freestyle

Virginia’s Aimee Canny led the way in the 200 free with a time of 1:43.08. Four of the times are under 1:44. Stanford’s Aurora Roghair was second in 1:43.27, .01 up on Lea Polonsky. Virginia had a second A finalist in Annalie Moesch in fourth.

Men’s 200 freestyle

It’s even tighter in the 200 free, with 1.05 seconds separating the top 12, with Jack Alexy at the bottom of it.

Henry McFadden led the way in 1:32.27 for Stanford. Kaii Winkler was second in 1:32.52, with Louisville’s Guy Brooks third in 1:32.71. NC State has two in the A final, as does Cal, led by Lucas Henveaux in fourth, plus ninth place and 12th.
