Pan Pacific Championships: Day Three Heat Sheets; Battle Brewing in Women’s 400 Freestyle
The third morning session at the Pan Pacific Championships will start with the can’t-miss women’s 400-meter freestyle, as world-record holder Summer McIntosh lines up with Katie Ledecky and Lani Pallister. All three women have already recorded victories during the first two days of competition. While McIntosh won the 400 individual medley on Thursday night, Ledecky (1500 freestyle) and Pallister (200 freestyle) claimed Night One triumphs.
There will be eight events contested during the Day Three prelims, with the men’s 400 freestyle second on the slate. There will also be action in the women’s and men’s 100 butterfly, 200 backstroke and 50 breaststroke. In the women’s 100 butterfly, world-record holder Gretchen Walsh will go to work, having won the 50 fly on the first day of the meet and following with a silver medal in the 100 freestyle.
Coming off a gold medal in the 100 breaststroke, the United States’ Van Mathias will lead the field in the 50 breaststroke, where he is the American-record holder. Mathias also won silver in the 50 butterfly. As for the men’s 100 butterfly, Shaine Casas enters action as the top seed. In the 400 freestyle, Australian ace Sam Short will be the man to beat, having already prevailed in the 800 freestyle.
