2021 ACC Women’s Swimming Championships, Day Four Prelims: UVA on Verge of Another Team Title
2021 ACC Women’s Swimming Championships
Greensboro, Day Four Heats
The 2021 ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships continued Saturday from Greensboro, North Carolina with Virginia holding a comfortable lead over North Carolina state in the team standings. The Cavaliers benefited from a superb Night Three and will try to keep the momentum rolling during the last session of prelims.
Here is what unfolded during the Day Four prelims:
200 Backstroke
Coming off a dominant victory in the 100 backstroke from the previous night, N.C. States Katharine Berkoff put herself in position to collect a backstroke double as she clocked 1:50.82 in the 200 distance. That effort put Berkoff more than a second clear of teammate Emma Muzzy, who was timed in 1:52.23. Another Wolfpack swimmer, Kathleen Moore, grabbed the fourth position for the final, behind a swim of 1:52.87.
Alex Walsh, who has worn numerous hats for Virginia throughout the meet, qualified in the third spot on the strength of a 1:52.68 effort. Walsh already owns a conference title in the 200 individual medley and was third in the 100 breaststroke, examples of her versatility. The freshman has also played key roles on various UVA relays. The Cavaliers also advanced Reilly Tiltmann (1:53.44) to the final, as she placed just behind No. 5 qualifier Emma Atkinson of Virginia Tech, who went 1:53.04.

This event figures to be a top-flight showdown, even with Virginia’s Kate Douglass opting for the 100 freestyle over the 200 breast. The top seed went to N.C. State’s Sophie Hansson in 2:06.35, and set the junior up to add gold to the title she won in the 100 breaststroke on Friday night. However, Hansson will have to deal with Virginia’s Ella Nelson, who grabbed the second seed in 2:06.88.
N.C. State’s Andrea Podmanikova enters the final as the third seed, off a morning swim of 2:08.52, and was followed in fourth by Virginia’s Anna Keating (2:08.68). N.C. State’s Abigail Arens (2:08.92) and Julia Poole (2:09.00) were in fifth and sixth and UVA’s Alexis Wenger was seventh in 2:09.36, with Duke’s Sarah Foley at 2:10.12 for the eighth seed.
