A Reminder of the 2020 (2021) Olympic Trials Qualifying Times

Just a few weeks into the New Year, the countdown is on again to the United States Olympic Trials. The qualifying competition for the Olympic Games in Tokyo is scheduled for June 13-20, 2021 in Omaha, Nebraska, marking the fourth consecutive time the meet will be held in the midwest city. The Olympic Trials will see the debut of the men’s 800 and women’s 1500 freestyle events as they were added to the Olympic schedule for the first time by the IOC.

Each of the cut times for the next Trials is faster than the 2016 cuts. However, only 12 of the 26 previously contested events improved by more than one second. The most significant drop was the men’s 1500 free, which shifted from a 2016 qualifying time of 15:49.99 to a 15:44.89. On the women’s side, the women’s 400 IM saw the biggest drop with a new qualifying time of 4:51.79 over 2016’s 4:54.99.

The Olympic Trials will be held over an eight-day period and is considered by some to be the most pressure-packed event in the world, due to the power and depth of the United States. The top-two finishers in each individual event will earn a berth to the Tokyo Games, although as many as six athletes can be selected to the Team USA roster in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle for relay duty.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States Trials and Olympic Games were delayed a year.
