The 2019 Speedo Sectional in Plantation, Florida, finished up on Sunday with stellar performances across the board. Sarasota put forth an impressive effort in both men’s and women’s events, while South Florida made their presence known from Night One.

Women’s 200 Butterfly

Mary Smutny from AK Sharks in South Florida edged out Sarasota’s Isabel Traba (2:15.63) with an impressive time of 2:15.05, as the two ran away from the field. Blue Dolphins swimmer Abigail Gibbons clocked in at third with a time of 2:18.55, followed by Sarasota’s Emma Weyant (2:19.47).

Jennifer Secrest (2:21.09) swam in at fifth, followed by Michelle Morgan (2:21.97), Samantha Banos (2:23.21), and Megan Corcoran (2:24.03).

Men’s 200 Butterfly

Belen’s Bryan Alvarez put forth a tremendous effort in the last 100 to out-swim Sarasota’s Alexander Gusev (2:05.97) and post a time of 2:05.63. Unattached Gabriel Araya swam in at third with a time of 2:06.08, followed by Jupiter Dragons’ Caleb Petranchuk (2:06.70).

Rafael Rodriguez (2:07.25) clocked in at fifth, followed by David Gapinkski (2:10.24), Juan Zapata (2:12.06), and Kevin Degrijze (2:12.44).

Women’s 100 Free

LCLA’s Marie Wattel completely left the pack when she cinched the win with a time of 55.21. Her teammate, Emily Crane out-touched Gator Swim Club swimmer Talia Bates (57.05) with a time of 57.02.

Hydro4’s Micayla Cronk touched in at fourth with a time of 57.15, followed by Allyson Ponson (57.61), Emily Barclay (57.62), Mckenna Smith (57.74), Rebecca Moynihan (58.40).

Men’s 100 Free

It was a tight sprint to the finish for Araya (51.80) and Colorado Stars swimmer Kent Olsen-Stavrakas (51.93), with Sunrise Swimming stalwart Sidrell Williams keeping with the pack, posting a time of 51.97.

Performance Aquatics’ Runar Borgen finished with a time of 52.01 to take fourth, followed by Sam Irvine (52.17), Steven Aimable (52.32), Thiago Sickert (52.72), and Blake Wilton (53.79).

Women’s 200 Breast

Sarasota’s 13-year-old Gracie Weyant stole the show with an impressive 2:38.22, with Gulliver Swim Club’s Olivia Hernandez clocking in at 2:40.39. Saint Andrews’ Shayna Fetes (2:42.64) out-touched Micaela Sierra (2:42.73) for third.

Anna Auld swam (2:43.01) in at fifth, followed by Miranda Renner (2:43.12), Molly Golding (2:44.64), and Emma Wortman (2:48.34).

Men’s 200 Breast

Berkeley’s Ryaan Hatoum (2:23.21) took the 200 breast with ease, posting a time over four seconds faster than South Florida’s Juan Pablo Pineda (2:27.60) who swam in at second. East Coast’s Kevin Degrijze touched in at third with a time of 2:28.03, ahead of Alexander Gusev (2:28.79), Samuel Quintero (2:28.96), Arnold Luk (2:29.17), and Wilson Ward (2:38.38).

Women’s 200 Back

Gator Swim Club’s Caitlin Brooks surged ahead for the win with a time of 2:13.77 to finish up an impressive individual schedule. LCLA’s Charlotte Evans secured second with a time of 2:16.88 ahead of Sarasota’s Emma Weyant (2:17.66).

Gators’ Talia Bates (2:20.71) took fourth ahead of Celina Marquez (2:20.73), Michaela Mattes (2:22.99), Madison Cummings (2:22.99), and Micayla Cronk (2:26.96).

Men’s 200 Back

LCLA’s Dan Cross finished out the night with a decisive victory, posting a time of  2:05.74 ahead of Barrington’s Griffin O’Leary (2:09.09), who narrowly finished ahead of South Florida’s Lance Lesage (2:09.84).

Sarasota’s Liam Custer rounded out his meet with a time of 2:11.21, ahead of Julio Perez (2:12.00), Patrick Doyle (2:12.34), Jacob Hack (2:14.41), and Rafael Rodriguez (2:15.26).
