2019 Speedo Sectional Cary Day 3: Regan Smith Sets NAG, Claire Curzan Close

The 2019 Speedo Sectional in Cary, North Carolina, continued on Saturday with a full slate of events.

Regan Smith was a focal point, breaking the 17-18 national age group record in the 100 back at 49.74 during prelims.

She is the third-fastest performer in history in short-course yards, seven hundredths from Beata Nelson’s American record.

The previous NAG record was held by Amy Bilquist at 50.50.

In Saturday’s finals, Smith was very near her record pace and finished in 49.77.

Meanwhile, Claire Curzan was just a hundredth of a second off the NAG in the 50 free.

Women’s 200 Fly

Tac Titan’s Charlotte Hook won the 200 butterfly in a sectional meet record 1:53.70 to win the event by nearly six seconds.
South Carolina’s Elysse Pardus was second 91:59.22) and Winter Craig of Riptide was third (2:00.32).

Men’s 200 Fly

Star Aquatics’ Noah Henderson won the 200 fly, earning an easy victory in 1:45.47.

Teammate William Watson was second in 1:50.53 and Athens’ Jackson Harvin and Marlins’ Jaden Kring tied for third (1:50.54).

Women’s 50 Free

Tac Titans Claire Curzan was one hundredth of a second away from a national age group record in the 50 free. She won the event in 22.01 at age 14.

It was enough to beat Riptide’s Regan Smith, who took second in 22.51.

Marlins’ Abigail Arens was third in 22.96.

Regan Smith nearly matched her NAG set in prelims by winning the 100 back in 49.77. It was three hundredths off her prelim record time.

Tac Titans’ Claire Curzan continued her strong meet and took second in 51.58. Teammate Charlotte Hook was third (52.85).

Seventeen-year-old Tanner Hering won the 500 Free in 4:25.39 to finish nearly two seconds ahead of the field.
