2019 Sette Colli Trophy: Simona Quadarella Climbs World Rankings, Michael Andrew Swims 53.4 100 Back

The second night of finals from the 2019 Sette Colli Trophy in Rome will featured 12 events. A couple meet records fell the way to Kristof Milak and Michael Andrew on Saturday night in the same pool that hosted swimming at the 1960 Olympic Games. Ilaria BianchiChad Le Clos and Benedetta Pilato also climbed the world rankings list in their respective events.

Daiya Seto had the world’s fastest 400 IM on Saturday as he also sits eighth all-time in the event. Katinka Hosszu also swam a 4:33 in the 400 IM but was disqualified.

Women’s 100 Fly

Ilaria Bianchi of Italy won the 100 fly on Saturday at the 2019 Sette Colli Trophy with a 57.50. She won just ahead of fellow Italian Elena Di Liddo (57.51). Both swimmers were under their season best times as they moved into the top eight in the world for 2019. Bianchi and Di Liddo will most likely swim the 100 fly at the World Championships in four weeks.

Japan’s Rika Omoto (58.92) finished in third place.

Men’s 200 Fly

Hungary’s Kristof Milak broke the Sette Colli meet record in the 200 fly on Saturday in Rome with a 1:54.19. The time took down fellow Hungarian Tamas Kenderesi’s 1:54.33 from 2017 in the process. Milak finished a full second ahead of Italy’s Federico Burdisso (1:55.21) and 2017 World Champion Chad Le Clos (1:55.48) of South Africa. Milak still has the fastest time in the world for 2019 with his 1:53.19 from March.

Burdisso was also a 1:54.64 in April as he sits fifth in the world rankings for 2019. Le Clos did have a season best with his swim as he moved up to seventh in the world rankings. Brazil’s Leonardo De Deus (1:55.70) moved up to eighth in the world rankings with his swim.

Women’s 100 Back

Italy’s Margherita Panziera won the 100 back on Saturday at the 2019 Sette Colli in Rome with a 59.69. She was the only swimmer under 60 seconds with Kira Toussaint (1:00.01) of the Netherlands coming in second and Australia’s Holly Barratt (1:00.69) coming in third.

Men’s 100 Back

American Michael Andrew broke the championship record in the 100 back on Saturday at the 2019 Sette Colli Trophy in Rome with a 53.40. Andrew is now the third fastest (tied) American this year behind Ryan Murphy (52.99) and Matt Grevers (53.09). He is tied with Jacob Pebley (53.40) for ninth in the world rankings for 2019. Andrew was able to lower the meet record set by Spain’s Aschwin Wildeboer (53.67) in 2011.

Andrew finished ahead of Israel’s Yakov Toumarkin (54.15) and Great Britain’s Brodie Williams (54.23).

Women’s 400 IM

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu drew a disqualification in the 400 IM on Saturday at the 2019 Sette Colli Trophy in Rome. The win instead went to fellow Hungarian Zszusanna Jakabos (4:38.89). Hosszu originally touched first in 4:33.31, which was right off her 4:33.06 season best. Hosszu is still second in the world rankings for 2019 behind Japan’s Yui Ohashi.

Serbia’s Anja Crevar (4:40.15) and Turkey’s Viktoria Gunes (4:44.31) finished second and third.

Men’s 400 IM

Japan’s Daiya Seto put the world on notice on Saturday at the 2019 Sette Colli Trophy in Rome with a 4:07.95 in the 400 IM. Seto was able to put up the world’s fastest time in the event as he previously held the quickest time at 4:09.25 from January. He was just off the meet record of 4:07.47 by David Verraszto from 2017. Seto also lowered his own personal best of 4:07.99 from the same Sette Colli meet in 2017 when Verraszto went that meet record.

He is now well in front of Max Litchfield (4:10.94) in the world rankings and is looking to win the World title back this summer that he lost from American Chase Kalisz in 2017. Seto was the World Champion in 2013 and 2015.

Verraszto finished in second place tonight in Rome with a 4:11.90. He was able to lower his season best of 4:12.65 from March as he sits third in the world for 2019. Third place went to Joan Pons Ramon of Spain at 4:17.61.

Women’s 100 Free

Denmark’s Pernille Blume was able to win the battle of the heavyweights in the 100 free on Saturday at the 2019 Sette Colli Trophy in Rome. Blume swam a 53.44 to win ahead of veterans Femke Heemskerk (53.54) and Federica Pellegrini (53.66). Blume was right at her season best of 53.40 from the FINA Champions Series in Budapest. Pellegrini’s time is a season best for her as she was a 53.72 in April. She sits 15th in the world for 2019 with her swim.

Blume currently sits 9th while Heemskerk sits 10th (53.47) in the world with their season bests.

Brazil’s Breno Correia won the 100 free on Saturday night at the 2019 Sette Colli Trophy in Rome with a 48.48. Correia out-touched fellow Brazilian Marcelo Chierighini (48.55) in the process. Correia was slightly off his 48.11 season best from April that puts him ninth in the world for 2019. Sergii Shevtsov of the Ukraine finished in third at 48.79.

Women’s 50 Breast

Italy’s Benedetta Pilato swam the third fastest time of 2019 in the 50 breast with a 30.28. The Italian finished ahead of Brazil’s Jhennifer Conceicao (30.54) and fellow Italian Martina Carraro (30.62) in the event on Saturday at the 2019 Sette Colli Trophy in Rome. Pilato now sits third in the world rankings behind Lilly King (29.63) and Yulia Efimova (29.93).

Pilato was a 30.61 in April and lowered her best time to win in Rome. Conceicao currently sits sixth in the world rankings with a 30.47 from April while Carraro is just ahead of her at 30.45.

Men’s 50 Breast

Great Britain’s Adam Peaty claimed another win in the 50 breast on Saturday at the Sette Colli in Rome with a 26.53. Peaty was just off his 26.49 best time from April as he sits third in the world for 2019. He was in a close race on Saturday with Brazil’s Felipe Lima (26.61) and Joao Gomes (26.68). Gomes (26.42) and Lima (26.68) currently sit ahead of Peaty in the world rankings.

Italy’s Simona Quadarella swam the fifth fastest 800 free of 2019 on Saturday at the 2019 Sette Colli Trophy in Rome. Quadarella swam an 8:21.20 to lower her season best from 8:25.55 in April. Quadarella finished four seconds ahead of Hungary’s Ajna Kesely (8:25.29) in second as Kesely moved up to seventh in the world rankings. Italy’s Martina Caramignoli (8:37.62) was third.
