2019 FINA World Swimming Cup Tokyo: Seliskar Swims 51.4 100 Fly
The first day of the 2019 FINA World Swimming Cup started on Friday morning in Tokyo, Japan. The biggest highlight of the prelims session was Andrew Seliskar posting a 51.4 in the 100 fly to move to eighth in the world rankings for 2019. Katinka Hosszu and Jacob Pebley also put up solid heats times in their swims.
Women’s 400 Free
Australia’s Kiah Melverton had the fastest 400 free time on Friday morning at the 2019 FINA World Swimming Cup in Tokyo. Melverton successfully made two A-Finals at World Championships last week, placing seventh in both the 800 and 1500 freestyle finals. She is ahead of Japan’s Miyu Namba (4:12.50) and Spain’s Mireia Belmonte, who had a disappointing World Championships with zero medals. She won three medals two years ago at the Budapest World Championships.
USA’s Erica Sullivan (4:12.75) and Australia’s Maddy Gough (4:13.06) placed fourth and fifth. Sullivan was fifth in the 25K at Worlds while Gough was fifth in the 1500.

Men’s 400 Free
New Zealand’s Zac Reid is the top seed for the men’s 400 free ahead of Lithuania’s Danas Rapsys, who was fourth in this event at World Championships last week with a much quicker 3:43. Japan will have half the field on Friday night at the FINA World Swimming Cup with Shogo Takeda (3:54.10) and Kohei Yamamoto (3:54.17) having the quickest times this morning.
Canada’s Jeremy Bagshaw (3:54.21) and Tristan Cote (3:55.65) also made the final.

Women’s 50 Back
Australia’s Emily Seebohm, who missed the World Championships team, swam a 28.07 to claim the top seed in the 50 back. She is ahead of Austria’s Caroline Pilhatsch (28.09) and fellow Aussie Holly Barratt. Sweden’s Michelle Coleman (28.59) is the only other non-Japanese swimmer to make the final.

USA’s Jacob Pebley, fresh off a sixth place finish in the 200 back at World Championships last week, swam a 1:56.86 to get the top seed in the men’s 200 back on Friday morning at the FINA World Swimming Cup in Tokyo. Pebley is ahead of 2015 World Champ Mitch Larkin, who did not swim this event last week. Japan’s Yuma Edo is seeded third at 1:59.85 as the top three were the only ones to get under 2:00.

Women’s 200 Fly
World Cup queen Katinka Hosszu was the lone swimmer to break 2:10 in the 200 fly heats on Friday morning at the FINA World Swimming Cup in Tokyo. Hosszu was a 2:09.42 ahead of Zsuzsanna Jakabos (2:10.25) and Australia’s Brianna Throssell (2:10.66). Throssell was 11th at Worlds in this event but scratched out of the heats. Hosszu and Jakabos did not swim this event for Hungary as Boglarka Kapas won the gold medal for their country.

Men’s 100 Fly
USA’s Andrew Seliskar put up the eighth fastest time in the world in the 100 fly with a 51.43 on Friday morning at the 2019 FINA World Cup in Tokyo. Seliskar is now in a tie with Japan’s Naoki Mizunuma for that spot in the world rankings this year. Mizunuma swam this morning for seventh place at 52.44. He is ahead of Hungary’s Szebasztian Szabo (51.77) and USA’s Ryan Murphy (52.13).
USA’s Michael Andrew (52.24) and Zach Harting (52.65) also swam in the heats this morning.

Women’s 200 Breast
Tatjana Schoenmaker, coming off a silver medal last week in Gwangju, swam a 2:25.87 to take the top seed on Friday morning at the 2019 FINA World Swimming Cup in Tokyo. Schoenmaker was the first ever South African woman to win a medal at the World Championships in swimming. She is ahead of Japan’s Reona Aoki (2:25.96) and Spain’s Jessica Vall (2:26.53).

Men’s 100 Breast
Belarus’ Ilya Shymanovich is coming off a disappointing World Championships where he didn’t even make the final in the 100 breast after coming in as the second fastest performer ever. Shymanovich was a 59.41 at the World Swimming Cup as he is looking to erase those demons from Gwangju. He was 12th last week at 59.38 and didn’t make the final.
Japan’s Yasuhiro Koseki, who placed fourth last week in this event, was a 59.60 for second seed. Japan’s Yoshiki Yamanaka (59.85) and Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi (59.96) also broke 1:00.
