2019 FINA World Swimming Cup Tokyo: Rapsys, Schoenmaker, Shymanovich Break Meet Records

The first night of finals from the 2019 FINA World Swimming Cup in Tokyo began on Friday night in Tokyo, Japan with ten events on the schedule. Three World Cup meet records fell on Friday night in Japan with Ilya Shymanovich (100 breast), Tatjana Schoenmaker (200 breast) and Danas Rapsys (400 free) while Andrew Seliskar also moved up to sixth in the world rankings in the 100 fly.

Men’s 400 Free

Danas Rapsys broke the World Cup meet record with a 3:45.57, lowering the meet record of 3:46.76 from James Guy in November 2015. Rapsys was in control during the entire race which came as no surprise since he was fourth last week at World Championships with a 3:43. Rapsys won tonight in Tokyo ahead of New Zealand’s Zac Reid (3:50.25) and Canada’s Jeremy Bagshaw (3:52.20).

Women’s 200 Breast

South Africa’s Tatjana Schoenmaker broke the second World Cup meet record of the night with a 2:22.35 on Friday night at the FINA World Swimming Cup in Tokyo, Japan. Schoenmaker broke the meet record of 2:22.87 that Viktoria Gunes set in 2015 in Dubai. Schoenmaker had a solid back half as she won ahead of Japan’s Reona Aoki (2:24.33).

Schoenmaker also went faster than she did to win the silver medal at World Championships but was actually a 2:21 in the semifinals. Spain’s Jessica Vall finished in third at 2:25.32.

Men’s 100 Breast

Ilya Shymanovich of Belarus broke the third World Cup meet record of the night on Friday night at the FINA World Swimming Cup in Tokyo. Shymanovich swam a 58.73 in the 100 breast to lower the record of 58.97 from Cameron van der Burgh set in 2015. Shymanovich was looking to have a much stronger World Cup showing than what he had at the World Championships last week. He was 12th at Worlds after coming in as the second fastest performer in history. His 58.73 was faster than what he swam in the heats in Gwangju as he won tonight ahead of Japan’s Yasuhiro Koseki (59.01) and USA’s Andrew Wilson (59.02).

Koseki was fourth at World Championships while Wilson was sixth. Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi (59.23) was also in the mix placing fourth tonight. Martinenghi was disqualified in the semifinals of the World Championships.

Women’s 200 Fly

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu picked up the first of her many World Cup gold medals on Friday night in Tokyo with a 2:07.10 in the 200 butterfly. Hosszu did not swim this event at the World Championships but her season best time puts her third in the world this year with her 2:06 from the FINA Champions Series. Hosszu was in a good race with Australia’s Brianna Throssell,  who finished second at 2:07.36. The time was a new season best for Throssell, who was a 2:07.39 in June and she moved up to 10th in the world rankings. She was 11th in the heats but scratched last week at World Championships.

Hungary’s Zsuzsanna Jakabos was third at 2:08.86.

Men’s 100 Fly

USA’s Andrew Seliskar continued his strong performances in the 100 fly on Friday at the FINA World Swimming Cup in Tokyo with a 51.34 in the 100 fly. Seliskar improved on his 51.43 from the heats and is now tied for sixth in the world with Hungary’s Szebasztian Szabo. Seliskar won the final ahead of Australia’s Grant Irvine (51.63) and Szabo (51.67).

Seliskar is now the second fastest American this year as he only swam the 200 free and 4×200 free relay last week at World Championships. Irvine is also the third fastest Australian for 2019. Seliskar missed the World Cup record of 51.04 from Chad Le Clos in 2015.

Women’s 400 Free

Australia’s Kiah Melverton held off Spain’s Mireia Belmonte in the 400 free final on Friday night at the World Swimming Cup in Tokyo with a 4:06.71. The time is faster than what Melverton swam at World Championships, where she was 11th with a 4:09. Belmonte was second at 4:06.81, who also went faster than her 4:10 from Worlds last week. Melverton had also been faster though this year, swimming a 4:05 in June.

Japan’s Miyu Namba (4:09.39) was third while USA’s Erica Sullivan was fourth (4:10.44). Australia’s Maddy Gough (4:10.50) was fifth. Gough was fifth at World Championships last week in the 1500 while Sullivan was fifth in the 25K.

Women’s 50 Back

Australia’s Emily Seebohm, coming off a year where she didn’t swim at World Championships for the first time since 2005, won the 50 back without a hiccup at 28.03 on Friday night in Tokyo at the World Swimming Cup. Seebohm’s time put her in a tie for 27th in the world with fellow Aussie Minna Atherton and Canada’s Danielle Hanus.

Austria’s Caroline Pilhatsch was second at 28.20 while Japan’s Emi Moronuki (28.27) was third.

Men’s 200 Back

Australia’s Mitch Larkin pulled out of the 200 back last week at World Championships to focus on the 200 IM. He swam a solid 1:55.97 on Friday night at the World Swimming Cup in Tokyo. Larkin finished ahead of USA’s Jacob Pebley (1:56.37). Pebley swam faster than he did at World Championships last week where he placed sixth in the final.

Japan’s Hayate Matsubara (1:57.74) finished in third place ahead of fellow Japanese Yuma Edo (1:58.55).

Women’s 50 Free

Sweden’s Michelle Coleman scored a new best time in the 50 free on Friday night at the FINA World Swimming Cup in Tokyo with a 24.66. She is coming off a World Championships where she was 14th in this event and did not make it out of semifinals. Coleman scored a big win over Australia’s Cate Campbell, who won the bronze medal last week at World Championships in this event.

Singapore’s Ting Quah was third at 24.92 while Denmark’s Jeanette Ottesen (24.97) placed fourth. Ottesen is back in the pool after having a child not long ago.

Men’s 50 Free

Russia’s Vladimir Morozov just missed the World Cup record of 21.49 that he set last year. He swam a 21.56 on Friday night in Tokyo at the FINA World Swimming Cup, winning ahead of Japan’s Shinri Shioura (21.92) and USA’s Michael Andrew (21.94). Morozov was fourth at World Championships last week with a 21.53.
