The second night of finals from the 2019 FINA World Swimming Cup in Jinan, China had ten individual events and saw two new meet records set on Friday night. Vladimir Morozov was the star of the day as he broke the 100 free world cup record and also tied his own meet record in the 50 back. China’s Qin Haiyang didn’t win the 200 IM, getting touched out by Mitch Larkin, but he moved into the top 10 in the world in the process.

The Chinese crowd was also rather excited with wins from Ji Xibjie in the 1500, Hou Yawen in the 200 free and Yan Zibei in the 50 breast.

Men’s 50 Back

Russia’s Vladimir Morozov tied the World Cup record in the 50 back on Friday night at the FINA World Swimming Cup in Jinan with a 24.43 to tie his own record he set last year. This is Morozov’s second win of the weekend after his impressive 21.5 last night in the 50 free where he just missed the meet record but also swam faster than he did at the World Championships.

Morozov carried that momentum into Friday night as he did not do the 50 back at the World Championships but his time would have tied the gold medal winning time from Zane Waddell from the final night of the World Championships. It is not the fastest time in the world but it is still an impressive feat for Morozov who finished ahead of Michael Andrew (24.85) and China’s Xu Jiayu (25.25).

Men’s 100 Free

Vladimir Morozov has been the swimmer of the meet this weekend in Jinan, China at the FINA World Swimming Cup. He broke the 100 free World Cup record with a 47.99 to take down the old record of 48.11 that was set by Blake Pieroni in 2018. The time was much better than what Morozov swam at the World Championships when he didn’t make it out of the semifinals with a 49.0. Morozov is now ranked 12th in the world with his swim as he finished ahead of Pieroni (48.15) and Szebasztian Szabo (48.63).

Pieroni also had a solid swim as he was not far off his 47.8 from Worlds when he was fourth in the individual final in Gwangju.

China’s He Junyi (48.67) and Italy’s Santo Condorelli (48.73) finished fourth and fifth in the final as He tied his time from Worlds and Condorelli swam 0.07 faster than he did in the heats.

Larkin has the fastest time in the world this year but couldn’t quite match that at the World Championships, only managing a seventh place finish in Gwangju. Qin did not swim this at Worlds, electing to swim the 200 breast instead. Qin moved up to eighth in the world with his swim.

Australia’s Thomas Fraser-Holmes (2:00.29) finished in third place while Lithuania’s Andrius Sidlauskas (2:02.08) was fourth.

Men’s 1500 Free

China’s Ji Xinjie started the Friday night session of the 2019 FINA World Swimming Cup in Jinan with a win in the 1500 free at 15:16.15 over fellow Chinese Meng Rui (15:17.85). Ji swam at the World Championships a couple weeks ago and only managed a 15:15 so it has to be a good sign for him and his coach to be able to be right where he was at Worlds a couple weeks later. Ji reached the final in the 400 free at the start of the week.

USA’s Brennan Gravley finished third, which ranks him out of the top 50 in the world. His best time was earlier this summer at 15:19 and was about a second quicker in Tokyo last week with a 15:22.

Women’s 200 Free

Hou Yawen won the second event for the Chinese on Friday night in the women’s 200 free with a 1:58.98 at the FINA World Swimming Cup in Jinan. Hou’s time ranks her outside the top 50 in the world for 2019 but she gave the Chinese fans something to cheer about when she ran down Sweden’s Michelle Coleman in the 200 free final. Coleman was second at 1:59.07 after leading for the majority of the race. Coleman has enjoyed a nice comeback year after sitting out 2018.

Hungary’s Zsuzsanna Jakabos (1:59.28) finished in third place ahead of China’s Ye Shiwen (2:00.10), who has also enjoyed a nice comeback this year, winning two World Championships medals in Gwangju.

Women’s 100 Back

Katinka Hosszu picked up her first win of the day on Friday night at the 2019 FINA World Swimming Cup in Jinan with a 59.65 in the 100 back. Hosszu did not swim this event at the World Championships to instead focus on the 200 IM. It wasn’t a season best for Hosszu since she was a 59.2 at the FINA Champions Series in Budapest. She was in a tight race with Australia’s Emily Seebohm, who finished in second at 59.76. Seebohm has also been quicker this year with a 59.4 last week.

This has to be a good sign for both swimmers to be able to swim fast on an extended rest as they start gearing up for the Olympic year next year.

China’s Chen Jie (1:00.74) finished in third place as she was only a tenth off her fastest swim from the World Championships a couple weeks ago. Chen was 16th in the semifinals in Gwangju.

China’s Yan Zibei gave the Chinese crowd in Jinan something to cheer about on Friday night at the 2019 FINA World Swimming Cup. Yan won the 50 breast final with a 27.12 to out-touch Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi (27.18). Yan had a successful World Championships where he broke two Asian records in the 50 and 100 breast, winning a bronze medal in the longer distance. He did not lower the Asian record tonight but it was still good enough for the win. Martinenghi swam faster than he did at the World Championships in the semifinals when he placed 14th.

USA’s Michael Andrew (27.45) was third ahead of Brazil’s Felipe Franca (27.46) and China’s Wang Lizhuo (27.69).

Women’s 50 Fly

Australia’s Cate Campbell won the splash and dash in the 50 fly on Friday night as she swam a 25.63 to finish just ahead of fellow Aussie Holly Barratt (25.66). Campbell is not normally known as a butterflyer but said she would swim just the 50. It was a quick time for Campbell and it would have put her sixth in the Worlds final a couple weeks ago.

Denmark’s Jeanette Ottesen finished in third place at 25.86. She is enjoying a nice comeback to swimming this year after rededicating herself to the sport, taking inspiration from fellow mother Dana Vollmer. She was only a tenth off her Worlds time when she was seventh at 25.76.

Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson won the 100 breast by nearly a full second as she set a new season best at 1:07.06 on Friday night in Jinan. Atkinson is now ranked 20th in the world and she went faster than her 1:07.1 from the World Championships a couple weeks ago when she was 11th in Gwangju. Atkinson is approaching her fifth Olympics if she can meet the qualifications for next year.

Russia’s Vitalina Simonova is chasing her first Olympic berth as she was second tonight at 1:08.03. She is much better at the 200 as evident by her 2:24 last night. China’s Yu Jingyao (1:08.07) finished in third place.

Men’s 200 Fly

Australia’s Grant Irvine had a solid end to the night on Friday at the 2019 FINA World Swimming Cup in Jinan. Irvine swam a 1:55.94 in the 200 fly as he was right on his season best of 1:55.8. He did not make the World Championships team for Australia so this had to feel good knowing he could swim right at his best as he is looking to gain some momentum heading into the Olympic year. Irvine is ranked 15th in the world and is the second fastest Australian this year.

He finished ahead of fellow Aussie Nic Brown (1:57.32), who was not far off his season best of 1:56.5 from April. New Zealand’s Wilrich Coetzee (2:00.14) finished in third place.
