The second preliminary session of the 2019 FINA World Cup in Singapore featured nine total preliminary events on Friday morning as this is the third and final stop of the Asia cluster of the World Cup. There weren’t any standout swims in the morning as most of the athletes are saving their best swims for the finals. USA’s Breeja Larson had a nice 100 breast morning swim with a 1:07.5. Josep Schooling made an appearance in the 200 IM heats as well in front of the Singapore crowd.

Men’s 50 Back

USA’s Michael Andrew got the morning prelims started with a 24.90 in the 50 back heats on Friday morning at the FINA World Cup in Singapore. Andrew is seeded ahead of Australia’s Mitch Larkin and Russia’s Vladimir Morozov, who had a nice start to the third World Cup stage last night with a 21.2 in the 50 free. Larkin (25.37) is seeded second as he did not make it out of the heats in Gwangju in this event, despite winning the bronze in the 100 back. Morozov did not swim this at the World Championships.

These three swimmers notably did not swim the 200 free at the World Championships but Jakabos did swim this in Tokyo, placing eighth. Coleman has been a 1:57 in the past and has shown signs of her older self as she has competed these last three weeks at the World Cup.

Men’s 200 IM

Singapore’s Joseph Schooling made his World Cup debut on Friday morning at the FINA World Cup in Singapore with a 2:03.38 in the 200 IM. The final will be much quicker with Aussies Thomas Fraser-Holmes (2:04.51) and Mitch Larkin (2:05.30) in hot pursuit. Larkin was a 1:57 last week in Jinan for the victory there as he was also a 1:55 earlier this year which still is the fastest time in the world for the year. Lithuania’s Danas Rapsys made an appearance in an off event with a 2:04 in the 200 IM. Rapsys has made a nice collection of cash these three weeks in the 400 and 200 free and has elected to try his hand at an off event.

USA’s Jonathan Tybur (2:05.28) also qualified for the final as he used a strong breaststroke leg to pull even.

Women’s 100 Back

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu had a strong showing in the 100 back heats on Friday morning at the FINA World Cup in Singapore with a 59.61. Hosszu scratched out of the 100 back at the World Championships to focus on the 200 IM so she wanted to put up a solid 100 back time here on an extended rest. Hosszu was just off her season best of 59.58 as she is well ahead of second seed Emily Seebohm (1:01.10).

Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi put up a solid 27.38 in the 50 breast on Friday morning at the FINA World Cup in Singapore. The time was less than a tenth off of what Martinenghi swam in the semifinals of the World Championships where he didn’t make the final. He is seeded ahead of Michael Andrew, who did make the final in Gwangju and placed seventh. Andrew is seeded second with a 27.54 ahead of Brazil’s Raphael Rodrigues (27.99), USA’s Jonathan Tybur (28.13) and former world record holder Felipe Franca (28.47).

Australia’s Cate Campbell swam a 26.06 in the 50 fly heats on Friday morning at the FINA World Cup in Singapore as she is swimming in her final race of the long season. Campbell is not known as a butterflyer but has been known to be a solid 50 swimmer. She is ahead of talented butterflyers Zhang Yufei (26.12) of China and Jeanette Ottesen of Denmark (26.35). Ottesen was the 2013 World Champion in this event and is enjoying a nice comeback to swimming after having a child recently.

Men’s 100 Free

Italy’s Santo Condorelli has the top seed in the 100 free with a 49.31 as he has swum at all three World Cup stops in Asia this month. He was a 48.5 in Tokyo and a 48.7 in Jinan, placing only as high as fourth. Condorelli should have much better luck since he should be competitive with Hungary’s Szebasztian Szabo (49.85), China’s Cao Jiwen (49.94) and Russia’s Vladimir Morozov (50.66). Morozov will have a lot left in the tank, swimming a 21.2 last night in the 50. He broke the World Cup record last week in China with a 47.99 so he will be looking to finish off the Asia cluster on a good note.

USA’s Breeja Larson put up an impressive time in the 100 breast heats on Friday morning in Singapore with a 1:07.53. Larson was a 1:06 earlier this month at US Nationals as she is enjoying a nice resurgence as she chases an Olympic berth next year. She was an Olympic finalist in 2012 but missed the team in 2016. She is ahead of Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson (1:09.19) and Russia’s Vitalina Simonova (1:10.03), who have always been competitive at the World Cup.
