Stanford has built a huge lead on the rest of the field going into the final day of the 2017 NCAA Women’s DI Swimming and Diving Championships, but it was California who stole the headlines Friday night. The Golden Bears won three events on day three of the championships, compared to Stanford’s two. Here is how the night went down.
400 IM
NCAA Record: Katinka Hosszu (USC): 3:56.54, 2012
American Record: Katie Ledecky (Stanford): 3:57.68, 2017
US Open Record: Katinka Hosszu (USC): 3:56.54, 2012
It is not every day you get to see an American Record by Katie Ledecky go down. It may have been an off event for Ledecky, but her teammate Ella Eastin finished under Ledecky’s 3:57.68 from Pac-12’s with a 3:57.57 on Friday night. Eastin, the sophomore, defended her title, becoming the first to defend the 400 IM since USC’s Katinka Hosszu defended her title in 2012. Eastin is now the second fastest performer in the event behind Hosszu’s 3:56.54, which will stand as the NCAA and US Open record.
Texas A&M sophomore Sydney Pickrem used an incredible back half to finish second at 3:59.36. It is the first time Pickrem finished under 4 minutes in the event, moving her up to eighth all time in the event. Texas senior Madisyn Cox was third, matching her third place finish in the 200 IM last night with a 4:00.97. Texas A&M’s Bethany Galat (4:01.06), Denver’s Bailey Andison (4:03.09), Ohio State’s Lindsey Clary (4:04.69), Missouri’s Sharli Brady (4:05.22) and Virginia Tech’s Reka Gyorgy (4:07.37) also swam in the A-Final.
Stanford now has 10 NCAA titles in the 400 IM, the most of any school. Eastin (2016), Maya DiRado (2014), Julia Smit (2008-2010), Summer Sanders (1991, 1992), Janet Evans (1990) and Michelle Griglione (1989) also have won the race for Stanford in the past.

Farida Osman has always been known as a pure 50 freestyler. Friday night at the NCAA Championships, Osman turned in 8th place at the 50, and came back to touch first at the end of the 100. It looked to me as if she was closer to the top, and it could have been a pad malfunction on her turn. But nonetheless, Osman wins her first individual NCAA title, becoming the first Cal Golden Bear to win that event since Sara Isakovic stole the race in 2012. Osman is now the third fastest performer of all time behind record holder Kelsi Worrell and legend Natalie Coughlin.
North Carolina’s Hellen Moffitt finished second in that race with a 50.37, moving her up to fifth all time. The early leader in the race was USC freshman Louise Hansson, who ultimately finished third at 50.45. Texas A&M’s Sarah Gibson (50.63), Cal’s Noemie Thomas (50.65), Stanford’s Janet Hu (50.81), Ohio State’s Liz Li (51.34) and Indiana’s Gia Dalesandro (51.59).
California now has 11 NCAA titles in that event, breaking the tie with Stanford, who had 10. Previous winners for Cal were Isakovic (2012), Amanda Sims (2011), Natalie Coughlin (2001-2004) and Mary T. Meagher (1985, 1987).

At Louisville’s Ralph Wright Natatorium, there is a banner on the wall next to Joao de Lucca’s and Kelsi Worrell’s NCAA title banners that reads “reserved for future NCAA Champion.” They will be able to fill that banner now that sophomore Mallory Comerford has won the school’s third NCAA title in men and women’s swimming. But Comerford did not share that title, as she touched first with the legendary Stanford freshman Katie Ledecky. The duo touched first in 1:40.36.
It was expected to be a duel between Stanford’s Simone Manuel and Ledecky, with Comerford lurking behind them. Manuel took it out first at the 100 and held the lead going into the last 50. But Comerford was charging hard and almost held off the 200 free Olympic champion, touching literally at the same time. Manuel was third at 1:40.70. Ledecky and Comerford are now tied for second all time behind Cal’s Missy Franklin.
Michigan’s Siobhan Haughey (1:41.21), Virginia’s Leah Smith (1:42.66), Michigan’s Gabby DeLoof (1:43.11), Cincinnati’s Jackie Keire (1:43.69) and Texas A&M’s Claire Rasmus (1:44.32) swam in the final as well.
This is not the first time that we have had joint winners in the 200 free at the NCAA championships. Auburn’s Heather Kemp and North Carolina’s Jessi Perruquet tied for first in 2003. This is Stanford’s third 200 free title after Marybeth Linzmeier won in 1982 and 1984.

After splitting a 56.17 in the 400 medley relay last night, Indiana sophomore Lilly King was looking to lower her NCAA and American Record she set last month at the Big Ten Championships. Ultimately, King fell short of the record, but defended her title from last year, becoming the first person to do so since Texas A&M’s Breeja Larson won three straight from 2012-2014.
The battle behind King was very tight as it was freshman Lindsey Horejsi in second at 58.03 and Virginia’s Laura Simon was third at 58.20. Horejsi is now the 8th fastest performer in history and Simon moves into a tie for 15th all time with Katie Meili. Florida State’s Natalie Pierce, who lost her cap before the 75 turn, ended up fourth at 58.25. Louisville’s Andrea Cottrell (58.39), Iowa’s Emma Sougstad (58.79), NC State’s Kayla Brumbaum (58.91) and Missouri’s Katharine Ross (59.05) completed the A-final.

Kathleen Baker swam the second and third fastest 100 backstrokes of all time last night and tonight to win her first 100 back title. Baker, a sophomore, won the 200 IM last night and continued that momentum into a 49.84 tonight for the 100 back win, just off her 49.80 from last night’s medley relay lead off. Baker was battling the entire race with Olympic teammate and Georgia senior Olivia Smoliga, who finished second at 50.04. Smoliga is now sixth all time in the 100 backstroke. Missouri’s Hannah Stevens was third at 50.57.
American Record holder Ally Howe of Stanford finished fourth at 50.58. Stanford’s Janet Hu (50.73), Texas’ Claire Adams (50.95), Missouri’s Nadine Laemmler (51.13) and North Carolina’s Hellen Moffitt (51.14) also swam in the championship final.
California has now won six of the last seven NCAA titles in the 100 back and has 11 titles overall, the most of any school. Baker joins Rachel Bootsma (2013, 2015, 2016), Cindy Tran (2011, 2012), Natalie Coughlin (2001-2004) and Marilyn Chang (1999) as 100 back NCAA winners.

3m Diving
Yu Zhou of Minnesota won the 3m diving event ahead of Miami, Ohio’s Pei Lin. Zhou scored 392.75 ahead of Lin’s 383.50. Zhou last won the event in 2015. Zhou out dove a strong field that contained Olympian Kassidy Cook of Stanford and defending champ Sharae Zheng of Nevada.
This is Minnesota’s third win in the event after Zhou won in 2015 and Kelci Bryant won in 2010. The Golden Gophers also picked up some very valuable points in that event with three A-finalists scoring, giving them 48 points. Coach Wenbo Chen was the former USA national team diving coach from 2005-2009 so it is no surprise his expertise is showing on the boards in Minneapolis.
Stanford’s Cook (372.30), Minnesota’s Lexi Tenebaum (362.00), UCLA’s Maria Polyakova (351.80), Minnesota’s Sarah Bacon (347.25), Nevada’s Zheng (341.75) and Northwestern’s Olivia Rosendahl (314.70) also competed in the 3m final.

200 Medley Relay
NCAA Record: Stanford: 1:34.15, 2016 California: 1:34.10, 2017
American Record: Stanford: 1:34.15, 2016

California got its redemption after the DQ in the 400 medley relay last night with an NCAA and US Open Record in the 200 medley relay tonight. Kathleen Baker (23.62), Abbey Weitzeil (26.67), Noemie Thomas (22.70) and Farida Osman (21.11) swam a 1:34.10 to break Stanford’s record from last year at 1:34.15. That time will stand as the American Record because of Thomas’ Canadian nationality and Osman’s Egyptian nationality. Texas A&M was second at 1:34.85 and Stanford was third at 1:34.90.
Cal got some serious pressure from Texas A&M, who was searching for its first NCAA relay title in school history. Beryl Gastaldello (23.85), Jorie Caneta (26.40), Sarah Gibson (22.43) and Kristin Malone (22.17) swam for the Aggies. Stanford raced to a third place finish from lane 8 with Ally Howe (24.08), Kim Williams (27.12), Janet Hu (22.75) and Simone Manuel (20.95).
Baker had the fastest backstroke split at 23.62. Indiana’s Lilly King had the fastest breaststroke split at 25.62, the only swimmer under 26. Gibson swam the fastest fly split and Manuel had the fastest anchor split.
This is the 5th time California has won the NCAA title in the 200 medley, joining the teams from 2015, 2012, 2011 and 2000 as champions. The Pac-12 has now won nine of the last eleven NCAA titles in the 200 medley relay.

Stanford has a huge lead on the rest of the field going into tomorrow. The big battle will be between Georgia and Texas for fourth place. Only four teams will walk away tomorrow night with team trophies. Georgia has not placed lower than fourth since 2010 and Texas has not placed top four since 2001 when they were third.
