Hosszu Makes Two Finals on Day One of 2017 European SC Championships

Men’s 100m Butterfly
Italy started the action off with a bang in Copenhagen by having Piero Codia post the top time in the morning preliminary session. Codia’s 50.40 just narrowly edged out Poland’s Konrad Czerniak who swam a 50.48. Taking the third spot was Belarusian swimmer Hryhory Pekarski in 50.57. Hungarian butterfly legend Laszlo Cseh cruised to a 50.80, which qualified him fifth going into the semifinal session. Greece’s Andreas Vazaios rounded out the top sixteen in a 51.31.

Women’s 50m Breaststroke
A pair of Finnish swimmers earned the top two spots going into the semifinal session. Ida Hulkko and Jenna Laukkanen posted the only two sub-30 second times of 29.85 and 29.93. Due to FINA’s rules, only two swimmers from each country may advance to the finals, which pushed Finland’s third fastest swimmer, Veera Kivirinta out of the finals, despite posting the fifth fastest time. Lithuanian stud Ruta Meilutyte earned the third spot in 30.03. Ireland’s Mona McSharry finished out the top sixteen with her 30.80. There was a swim-off for a reserve spot between Israel’s Amit Ivri and Denmark’s Josefine Pedersen. The swim-off was won by Pedersen in a time of 30.68. Ivri touched second in 30.99.

Men’s 50m Breaststroke
Adam Peaty was in an unfamiliar spot after posting the second fastest time overall in the preliminary session. Peaty’s 25.94 was bested by Italy’s Fabio Scozzoli who turned in a 25.90. Russia’s Kirill Prigoda earned the third spot with his 26.03. Nabbing a European Junior record in the event was Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi with a 26.43. There was a three way tie for 15th place between The Netherlands’ Timon Evenhuis, Russia’s Ilya Khomenko and Serbia’s Caba Siladji who each turned in a 26.81. The swim-off between these three men featured Khomenko as the victor by turning in a time of 26.57 to Siladji’s 26.70 and Evenhuis’ 26.73.

Women’s 400m Individual Medley
Only two total preliminary heats were contested here with the top eight swimmers qualifying for the finals heat. Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu cruised her way to posting the top time in 4:27.45. Behind the Iron Lady was a pair of French swimmers, Fantine Lesaffre and Lara Grangeon, who took the second and third spots. Rounding out the top heat was Great Britain’s Emily Large in a 4:40.60.

Men’s 400m Freestyle
Hungary’s Peter Bernek will take ownership of the middle lane during the final’s session with his time of 3:39.86 from this morning’s preliminaries. Norway’s Henrik Christiansen was right behind in 3:40.07 while Sweden’s Victor Johansson took third. Johansson’s countryman, Adam Paulsson, took the eighth spot with a 3:42.93.

Women’s 100m Backstroke
Hosszu earned herself another spot in the middle of the pool tonight as she posted the top time here with a 56.78. Behind the Iron Lady was Kira Toussaint out of the Netherlands in 57.41. Taking the third spot was Russia’s Maria Kameneva in a time of 57.62. Rounding out the top-16 in the semi-finals was Sweden’s Hanna Rosvall.

Men’s 200m Backstroke
Germany’s Christian Diener posted the only sub-1:50 time of this morning’s heats, which earned him the top spot moving into tonight’s finals. Diener swam 1:49.77 while Russia’s Kliment Kolesnikov turned in a 1:50.92 to get himself the second spot. Producing the third fastest time this morning was Israel’s Yakov Yan Toumarkin in a 1:51.61. Belarusian Mikita Tsmyh took the eighth spot with a 1:52.14.

Men’s 4x50m Freestyle Relay
The Italians put together the quickest relay this morning with their time of 1:25.33. The Netherlands were just behind in 1:25.40 while Russia put up the third fastest time with a 1:25.49. The last team to make it into the top eight was Poland with a 1:26.38.

Women’s 800m Freestyle
Germany’s Sarah Koehler posted the fastest time this morning with a 8:19.39. Simona Quadarella out of Italy was able to put herself into the second position with a 8:20.41. Just behind in the third spot was Julia Hassler in 8:20.75. Slovenia’s Katja Fain took the last spot in the finals heat with her 8:31.38.
