Women’s 100 back

Etiene Medeiros became the first Brazilian to clear the FINA A cut of 1:00.25 this year with a 1:00.00 to lead qualifying.  Katarina Listopadova of Slovakia qualified second in 1:01.16 with Natalia De Luccas taking third in 1:02.64.

Maria Pessanha (1:03.63), Daynara Ferreira (1:03.64), Ana Pereira (1:03.73), Aline Caetano (1:03.84) and China’s Yang Yifan (1:03.92) rounded out the top eight.

Men’s 200 free

Nicolas Oliveira (1:47.09) and Joao De Lucca (1:47.81) already had the inside track on making the Olympic squad with FINA A cuts at the Brazil Open in December.

They didn’t harm themselves in prelims as the two went 1-2 in qualifying. Oliveira posted a 1:46.97, while De Lucca clocked a 1:47.77.  Both improving their times.

Andre Pereira (1:49.36), Federico Grabich (1:49.39), Felipe De Souza (1:49.39), Leonardo De Deus (1:49.45), Joao Amorim (1:49.57) and Giovanny Lima (1:49.67) also made the top eight.

One of the top swimmers in Brazil, Thiago Pereira, missed the chance to make Brazil’s 800 free relay with an 18th-place time of 1:50.92 this morning.

Women’s 100 breast

No Brazilian has cleared the FINA A cut of 1:07.85 yet this year.  Macarena Ceballos of Argentina paced prelims with a 1:08.73, while Jhennifer Alves took second in 1:09.08.

Ana Carvalho (1:09.19), Julia Sebastian (1:09.59), Juliana Marangoni (1:10.31), Beatriz Azzolini (1:10.52), Renata Sander (1:10.56) and Sae Saito (1:10.81) also made the finale.

Men’s 100 back

Guilherme Guido, who already set the South American record with a 53.09 in December to clear the FINA A cut time, blitzed his way to a 53.10 this morning to move to fifth in the world.

Henrique Rodrigues qualified second in 54.70, just off the FINA A cut time of 54.36. Leonardo Guedes took third in 54.85.

Fabio Santi (54.86), Vitor Guaraldo (54.88), Fernando Pires (55.40), Gabriel Fantoni (55.47) and Henrique Handa (55.48) also will swim in finals.

Women’s 400 free

No one came close to the FINA A cut of 4:09.08 as Japan’s Chinatsu Sato led the way with a 4:15.99.

Manuella Lyrio qualified second in 4:16.89 with Aline Rodrigues taking third in 4:17.44.

Slovakia’s Katarina Listopadova (4:18.03), Bruna Primati (4:19.11), Viviane Eichelberger (4:19.37), Julia Volkmann (4:23.41) and Carolina Bilich (4:23.94) also picked up finals spots.
